The Numbers one and two teams in the entire NHL meet in what is unquestionable the marquee matchup on Saturday. The Canucks are on a historic run – 17-1-2 in their last 20 games and they have not lost in regulation in 15 games! The Detroit Red Wings are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games and have won five straight road games. Both teams are hot – buckle up, it should be a good one!
The Detroit Red Wings keep plugging along despite injuries to two of their better offensive players. Pavel Datsyuk and Dan Cleary will miss Saturday’s game and Valtteri Filppula may miss the game with a sore groin. As we all know, the Wings are deep. Henrik Zetterberg has been scorching and role players Darren Helm and Todd Bertuzzi have filled the void left by the injured Superstars.
The Wings have the 2nd best offense in the NHL and will turn to Jimmy Howard once again in the league’s 17th best defense.
The Vancouver Canucks are realizing all of the lofty goals of their fans and their management. One regulation loss in 20 games has them in unfamiliar territory – leading the NHL standings. However, Vancouver’s last loss (although it was in overtime) came against the Wings. The Canucks are scoring at will and have the best offense in the NHL and have the best line in hockey – the Sedins with Alex Burrows. The Canucks have three lines that can do damage.
Vancouver will turn to Roberto Luongo on Saturday after a night off against Edmonton on Friday. Luongo is 19-8-3 this season with a 2.83 goals against average but is just 8-10-3 in his last 21 starts against Detroit with a 2.82 goals against average.
Betting Prediction: The Vancouver Canucks simply look unstoppable at the moment and have only lost three times in regulation at home this season. A team has to be 100% if they hope to knock off the Kings and the Wings are far from that. The injuries to their top flight players will be the difference in this one.
Pick: Vancouver Canucks -170
