This season looks eerily similar to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 1992-93 campaign, doesn’t it? The Pens didn’t win the Stanley Cup that season but they did set an NHL record with a 17-game winning streak. Their captain at the time, Mario Lemieux, had a season for the ages, notching 69 goals and 160 points in 60 games.

Flash forward to 2010-11. The Pens have won 12 straight games and counting. Sidney Crosby leads the NHL with 51 points in 31 games and has a point in 18 straight contests. In the modern era, those numbers are almost as impressive as Mario’s back in the day. The Penguins will try to make it 13 straight victories tonight in Philadelphia but it won’t be easy. The Flyers are the Eastern Conference’s highest-scoring team. We knew Mike Richards and Jeff Carter would be forces again this season but the Flyers are especially thrilled to see that Claude Giroux, Daniel Briere and Ville Leino have carried over their outstanding play from the 2010 playoffs.

It’s tempting to pick the Flyers at home but the betting trends favor Pittsburgh. The Pens have won 21 of their last 30 meetings with Philadelphia and the road team has won six of seven in this series. Also, how often do you get underdog betting value on a team with 12 straight wins? We may as well keep riding this wave.

NHL Trends:
