The Toronto Maple Leafs had a run of good fortune but the inevitable slump is in full swing once again. After winning four straight games, the Leafs have gone 1-3-1 in their last five while getting outscored 19-8 in those games. On Monday night, they travel to Raleigh to take on another team that has slumped after a hot streak of their own.

Toronto has continued to have issues scoring goals and it is still the Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur show in Leaf land – if they struggle, the Leafs have absolutely no chance of winning. Grabovski has 15 points in 15 games and MacArthur has three points in his last two. Off season acquisitions Colby Armstrong and Chris Versteeg aren’t helping the Leafs 26th ranked offense at all – Armstrong is pointless in four games and Versteeg hasn’t registered a point in three.

The Leafs finally woke up and recalled goaltender James Reimer from the minors. He was 4-2-0 with a 2.27 goals against average with the big club and could get the start in place of Jen Sebastien Guigere on Monday night. The Leafs are 23rd in the NHL in goals against and allow 3.0 goals per game.

The Carolina Hurricanes really made some noise, going 6-0-2 and climbing into striking distance of the Eastern Conference playoff teams. Since that streak, the Canes have lost four of six and look more like the team that has struggled through the season.

Carolina’s offense has been decent this season. They are 9th in the NHL averaging 2.9 goals per game. Captain Eric Staal has struggled recently tallying only one goal and one assist in his last four games but he does love playing the Leafs – 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 games. Jussi Jokinen has nine points in seven games, Tuomo Ruutu has 19 in 15 and Jeff Skinner continues to lead all rookies in scoring.

Cam Ward and the Carolina defense need to buckle down! They are 22nd in the NHL allowing 3.0 goals per game. Cam Ward is a poor 2-4 with a 3.36 goals against average in his last six home starts against the Leafs.

Betting Prediction: Toronto is 9-12-1 on the road this season and is 1-3-1 in their last five games overall. Carolina is 12-8-2 at home this season but is 8-2 in their last 10 games against Toronto.

Carolina has been plagued by inconsistency this season and their recent play hasn’t been impressive at all. The Leafs will likely start James Reimer in goal on Monday – the Leafs look like a different team with him in goal. They skate harder, play better defense and thrive with Reimer in goal. I like the trend to continue. This is a rare opportunity to back the brutal Leafs.

Trends:

Toronto is 1-5 SU in its last 6 games when playing Carolina
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Toronto’s last 6 games on the road
Carolina is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games when playing at home against Toronto
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Carolina’s last 7 games at home

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs +140
