The biggest rivalry in Canadian hockey (sorry Alberta – it’s true!) writes its next chapter on Thursday night as the Montreal Canadiens host their hated rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Montreal returns home after a schizophrenic road trip while the Leafs have been waiting having finished their best stretch of hockey since the very beginning of the season.

Toronto is playing very well despite Thomas Kaberle, Francois Beauchemin and Chris Versteeg’s departure. They have gone 7-2-2 in their last 11 games and have been buoyed by improved offense and great play for their unlikely goaltending star James Reimer.

The Leafs are still the third worst offensive team in the NHL averaging just 2.5 goals per game. Phil Kessel has shaken a brutal stretch and fierce criticism and has scored goals in four straight games. Nobody else is lighting it up for Toronto but a 7-2-2 record proves the fact that everyone is contributing in their own little way.

Goaltending has certainly served the Maple Leafs well in recent games. James Reimer is a revelation and for once the Leafs appear comfortable and confident with their backstop. Reimer is 3-0-1 in his last four games with a 1.25 goals against average.

The Montreal Canadiens will be happy to be away from the West Coast where they have traditionally struggled. However, the Habs have lost three of their last four games on home ice.  Montreal is 4-4-2 in their last 10 games overall and they are coming off an impressive win over the best team in the NHL in one of the toughest buildings in the league.

Montreal got their offensive leader Mike Cammalleri back from injury to aid an offense that had been sputtering during his absence. The Canadiens are 25th in goals for with an average of 2.5 goals per game. David Desharnais has been the most reliable forward recording eight points in his last seven games and although Max Pacioretty has averaged nearly a point per game in his last seven, he has gone three games without hitting the score sheet. Thomas Plekanec his pointless in three games and Scott Gomez only has one point in his last four. Time to step it up boys!

Carey Price had a poor couple of games in Alberta but he has been great overall this month and this season for that matter. He has two shutouts against the Leafs and has been a nightmare for Toronto in his career.

Betting Prediction: The Toronto Maple Leafs are 12-16-1 on the road this season and are 7-2-2 in their last 11 games overall. The Montreal Canadiens are 19-7-2 at home this season but have lost three of their last four games on home ice. The two teams have split their four meetings this season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost a lot of talent in the last couple of weeks but the team appears to have rallied around their shortcomings. The Canadiens got outplayed for eight of the nine periods during their Western road trip and if not for a superb effort by Carey Price, they would have returned home 0-3.

After travelling across country, I expect the Habs to be a tired bunch and to bow to an unexpectedly hot Leafs squad. Pick the upset!
