The New York Islanders have nearly officially ended their bid for the first overall draft choice in this years’ NHL draft but still have a ton of work to do if they want to realize an improbable dream of making this year’s playoffs. On Thursday night, the Islanders head to Philadelphia to take on a Flyers team that has defined consistency and solid play all season long.

New York has been playing very well as of late. Although they fell victim to the Leafs on Tuesday night, the Isles have gone 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and have done so with some timely offense and some surprisingly good goaltending from Al Montoya who happens to be the sixth different keeper that New York has used this season.

New York ranks 18th in offense and they score an average of 2.7 goals per game. This is a team that has put the onus on their youngsters and although they are wildly inconsistent, names like Matt Moulson and John Tavares have shown us glimpses of what they are capable of. Moulson has six goals in his last three games and John Tavares has 11 points in his last seven games.

New York’s defense has been dreadful this season allowing an average of 3.2 goals per game. It is really no wonder when you think of the number of backstops they have used. Al Montoya is the flavor of the week and he has posted an impressive 3-1-0 record since coming over from Phoenix with a 1.42 goals against average.

The Flyers continue to roll and there appears to be no end to what this team is able of. They currently lead the Eastern Conference by a whopping nine points and they are only one point back of the overall NHL lead. The Flyers have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and are top eight in the NHL in both goals for and goals against.

Philadelphia has the third best offense in the NHL averaging 3.3 goals per game. They have two insanely good lines that can beat any team on any given night. Their other two lines aren’t so bad either. Claude Giroux has led the way lately with 19 points in his last 17 games while Jeff Carter has seven goals and six assists in 13 games and Danny Briere has five points in four. Ville Leino, Mike Richards and James van Reimsdyck have also been playing very well.

The Philadelphia goaltender tandem is a “ride ‘em while they’re hot” scenario. At the moment, Brian Boucher is outplaying Sergei Bobrovsky. Boucher is 4-0-0 in his last four stars with a superb 1.72 goals against average. Expect to see Boucher on Thursday night.

Betting Prediction: The New York Islanders are 11-17-3 on the road this season and are 6-2 in their last eight games overall. New York is just 19-44-5 in their last 68 games against the Flyers. The Philadelphia Flyers are 19-8-3 at home this season and are 18-1 in the last 19 games against the Islanders.

If there is one thing about the Flyers that we all know is that they will bounce back after a tough loss – they rarely lose two in a row. The Flyers will be out to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Coyotes making this an easy game to pick. Poor Islanders!

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers -250
