The Carolina Hurricanes have gotten to where most thought was impossible just two months ago – eighth place in the Eastern Conferences. Now that they are in the final playoff position, their goal will be to hold onto it. A trip to Philadelphia on Thursday will be a big test for the Canes who have not fared well at all against the Flyers.

The Carolina Hurricanes used an incredible January to creep into the eighth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference. They have struggled recently however. Carolina has gone 4-5-1 in their last 10 games and are 3-2-1 in their last six.

Carolina has the ninth best offense in the NHL with an average of 2.9 goals per game. Eric Staal continues to be the most dependable Hurricane, along with super-rookie Jeff Skinner who scored twice on Tuesday against New Jersey to give him 20 goals on the season. The rest of the Hurricane offense is a committee – no player has eye-popping numbers in the last week or two.

Cam Ward has been the difference for the Hurricanes – when he is going badly so too does the team. When he is going well, the Canes are a team to be reckoned with. Ward may sit on Thursday after 14 straight starts. He is 1-7-1 with a 3.24 goals against average in his last nine games against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Flyers are on fire overall and they are particularly good at home. They are at the top of the Eastern Conference for a reason – they are good! The Flyers are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and have won two straight games overall.

Philadelphia continues to be the best scoring team in the NHL (3.4 goals per game). Jeff Carter has been the hottest Flyer and has recorded five goals and eight assists in his last five games. Against Carolina, Carter has an incredible nine goals and nine assists in his last eleven. Claude Giroux has eight points in five games and Ville Leino has three points in two games. Not mentioned are Mike Richards, Danny Briere and Scott Hartnell – the Flyers are big, deep and talented!

The Flyers are also good defensively, proving that it is not necessary to have a $5 million goaltender to be successful. Philadelphia is 9th ranked on defense and allows 2.5 goals per game. Sergei Bobrovsky has struggles as of late which means that Brian Boucher and his 1-0-0 with a 1.21 goals against average in two games may get the start.

Betting Prediction: The Carolina Hurricanes are 12-12-5 on the road this season and are 7-26-4 in their last 37 games against Philadelphia. The Flyers are 18-7-1 at home this season and have won six of their last seven on home ice. Philadelphia is 14-0-3 in their last 17 games against Carolina including eight straight wins. They are 20-7 overall and are 8-3 following a win.

There are two things going for the Flyers ahead of this game – they are playing extremely well and they absolutely own the Carolina Hurricanes. With Justin Peters likely to start in net for the Canes, this one should be all Flyers in a high scoring game.

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers -180 and the Over – 5.5 goals
