It seems unfathomable but the Pittsburgh Penguins could catch the Philadelphia Flyers for the Division and Conference lead on Tuesday night! Incredible. The Penguins have won four straight games to close within two points of the century plateau – right where the Flyers sit right now. With the seemingly impending return on Sidney Crosby, things are certainly looking up for the Pens!

The Philadelphia Flyers, despite a 5-1-4 record in their last 10 games have looked anything but a serious contender for the Stanley Cup. They did walk away with a win against the Isles on home ice but the other games during the home stand saw them lose to Pittsburgh, Washington and the Bruins. Philadelphia’s enormous lead in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference is all but gone.

The Flyers have definitely struggled in the offensive zone. Their offense is still ranked fourth in the league but players like Jeff Carter (one points in four games) and Ville Leino (no points in three games) have hit the skids. It is players like James van Riemsdyck who has four points in two games, Claude Giroux who has eleven points in ten games and Chris Versteeg that have been carrying the team.

Is anyone else worried about the goaltending situation in Philadelphia? The numbers show that panic may be premature. Sergei Bobrovski has been playing fairly well and it’s a good thing – Brian Boucher has not fared well at all recently.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have defied the NHL Odds and have remained at ther top of the Eastern without two of the best players on the planet. The Penguins can feel good about the fact that they have positioned themselves well just in time to get Sidney Crosby back from injury (possibly next week???). They are an impressive 19-11-5 without the world’s best player.

Pittsburgh’s offense hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire but what is impressive is their ability to get it done in the shootout. Pittsburgh’s last four games gave come down to shootouts with the Pens winning them all. Chris Kunitz, and Tyler Kennedy continue to be the bright starts on the Pittsburgh offense – Jordan Staal is pointless in his last three games.

Marc-Andre Fleury for MVP? Why not? He has been almost solely responsible for the Penguins ability to remain elite without an elite roster. He has 24 wins on the season and has gone 2-0-0 in his last two games with a stunning 0.46 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Philadelphia Flyers are one of the best road teams in the NHL at 24-9-4. The Pittsburgh Penguins are 24-13-2 at home this season and are 8-2 in their last 10 games overall.

The Pittsburgh Penguins won the last meeting between the two sides – 2-1 last week and I see the same thing happening again. The Penguins have a lot of momentum on their sides and a lot to look forward to – this momentum and optimism will carry them in this game.

Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins -120
