Two teams that are going in totally opposite directions meet in Atlanta on Thursday night as the uber-hot Flames meet the cold Thrashers. Calgary has won five straight games and is 7-1-2 in their last ten games while the Thrashers are just 2-5-3 in their last 10 games – losing their grip on eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Calgary Flames are on some kind of NHL Betting run! They are 11-3-3 in their last 17 games and are suddenly within striking distance of a most improbable playoff spot. It’s not like they have been beating slouches during their streak – Dallas, Vancouver and Nashville have all fallen victim to the Flames in their last five games.

Calgary suddenly has the 17th ranked offense in the NHL (2.7 goals per game). Jarome Iginla has led the charge with 12 points in his last 11 games. Iggy loves playing the Thrashers as well – he has seven goals and seven assists in his last seven games against Atlanta. Brendan Morrison has also been hot registering three goals and three assists in his last five games. Life is good in Flames land – that’s for sure!

It hasn’t just been the defense that has played better for the Flames recently – the 18th ranked defense (2.9 goals per game) has also come on. During their five game win streak, they have given up a total of 11 goals. Mikka Kiprusoff is 4-0-0 in his last four starts with a 1.68 goals against average after struggling mightily throughout December and most of January.

The Atlanta Thrashers have been absolutely miserable lately but they are still clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They are 2-5-3 in their last 10 games and have had few highlights in the last few weeks. Things had better turn around soon for Atlanta – some bubble teams are catching up!

Atlanta is still ranked 11th in the NHL in goals for despite a slump by most of their big names. Nobody is lighting it up at all for the Thrashers and the record has hit the skids just like their goal scoring ways. Example – Dustin Byfuglien has been held pointless in his last 11 games! Nothing is going right offensively for Atlanta!

The Thrashers defense has struggled all season but had been buoyed by the strong offense. When the offense struggles, the defense is exposed al little bit more. Ondrej Pavelec has been poor lately and the Thrashers have slipped to the fifth worst goals against average team in the league.

Betting Prediction: The Calgary Flames are 11-12-5 in the road this season and are 0-5-1 in their last six trips to Atlanta. However, the Flames have won five straight games and have only lost once in regulation in their last 10 games. The Atlanta Thrashers are 12-10-5 at home this season and are just 2-8 in their last 10 games overall.

Calgary is as Hot as any team in the NHL and likely won’t be extinguished by the Thrashers. It appears that all Calgary was lacking was confidence. Now that they have found their game, the Flames look like a real contender for at least a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Thrashers will be burned again!

Pick: Calgary Flames +105 and the Over – 5.5 goals
