The Calgary Flames return home on Wednesday after a less than inspiring 1-1-2 road trip to play the team directly ahead of them in the Western Conference – the Anaheim Ducks. It is truly do or die time for the Flames who trail Anaheim by four points for eighth place in the West and who have played more games than everyone that they are currently in a battle with.

Anaheim is playing their best hockey of the season presently. They have gone 11-3-0 in their last 14 games to jump into the final playoff position in the Western Conference. The Ducks have two lines that are playing extremely well and have a goaltender that hasn’t been beaten since being recalled from the minors.

Anaheim has climbed to the 10th best offense in the NHL thanks to two superb lines that are lighting up the league right now. The top line is anchored by Corry Perry who has 11 points in six games and leads the NHL with 44 goals, Ryan Getzlaf who has recorded 12 points in five games and Bobby Ryan. The second line boasts Teemu Selanne who registered five points in his last game and has six goals in five games, Saku Koivu and Jason Blake. Anaheim is deep and they are scary heading down the stretch.

Ray Emery stepped in for an injured Jonas Hiller and has grabbed a hold of the #1 spot for Anaheim. He is 5-0-0 with a 1.88 goals against average in his last five starts. Expect to see him on Wednesday night.

The Calgary Flames are running out of time. An incredible second half run just may fall short unless the team can gather some regulation wins. Wednesday night against a team that they trail by four points is a good start. The offense has been decent during their most recent 4-4-2 stretch but unfortunately for the Flames, goaltending has let them down.

Calgary owns the sixth best offense in the NHL scoring an average of just over 2.9 goals per game. Jarome Iginla has done his part with nine points in seven games and Rene Bourque has continued his strong second half play with seven points in his last six games. The Flames however need more from the likes of Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanguay in order to have a shot at the post season.

Mikka Kiprusoff has picked a bad time to go into a puck stopping slump. He has a 3.86 goals against average in his last six starts for Calgary and in two starts versus Anaheim this season he has given up eight goals. Needless to say, the Flames need Kipper to be at his best on Wednesday night.

Betting Prediction: The Anaheim Ducks are 19-16-3 on the road this season and are 7-2 in their last nine games against Calgary. The Ducks have won all three meetings with the Flames this season. The Calgary Flames are 22-12-4 at home this season but have lost six of their last seven games overall.

There is not a whole lot to like about the way the Flames have played the last couple of weeks and there is a ton of reasons to like the way Anaheim is closing out their season. Calgary has one line that can beat you – Anaheim has two. Calgary’s goaltending has been disappointing lately – Anaheim’s has been terrific. Look for the Ducks to put another nail in Calgary’s coffin on Wednesday – the wind is out of the Flames’ sails!
