Probably the best game on the NHL Betting schedule goes in Los Angeles on Thursday night when the Phoenix Coyotes pay visit, clinging to a slim two point lead over the Kings in the Western Conference standings. The Kings are hot and they got better since the last time they hit the ice – deadline-day acquisition Dustin Penner and his 21 goals on the season will make his Kings debut.

The Phoenix Coyotes have hit the NHL Betting skids. After winning eight straight games and propelling themselves into third place in the Western Conference, they have lost four straight games, some in heartbreaking fashion. They have let the San Jose Sharks pass them in the Western race and in the Pacific division and now the Kings are trying to do the same. The Coyotes are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and need to snap out of their slump pronto!

Phoenix owns the 11th best offense in the NHL and score a shade over 2.8 goals per game. Captain Shane Doan has led the charge recently recording three goals and six assists in his last nine games. Ray Whitney has chipped in with three points in two games and Mikkel Boedker has four points in his last three outings. Recent acquisition Rotislav Klesla has also been a nice surprise and appears as though he will help the struggling offense.

Phoenix’s slide has coincided with the poor play of the usually reliable Ilya Bryzgalov. Although he and the Coyotes rank 17th in the NHL in goals against (2.8 goals per game), Bryzgalov has been solid for the most part. However, he is 0-2-1 in his last three starts with a 3.60 goals against average. In his last seven starts in Los Angeles, Bryzgalov is an amazing 6-0-1 with a 1.55 goals against average.

The Los Angeles Kings are coming! After a poor start to 2011, the team appears as if they have worked out the kinks and are ready to take their position as one of the better Western Conference teams. The Kings have used solid goaltending and a renewed scoring touch to go 11-2-3 in their last 16 games.

LA has the 16th ranked offense in the league and only average 2.7 goals per game. Dustin Penner should help those numbers. He will join a line with Anze Kopitar (who has six points in his last three games) to become one of the most feared lines in hockey. Also contributing offensively are Brad Richardson who has three points in two games, Wayne Simmonds who has four points in three games and super-defenseman Drew Doughty who has two goals and two assists in his last three contests.

Jonathan Quick has emerged to be one of the most reliable backstops in the NHL. It is true that he has one of the best young defensive corps. in the NHL but his numbers don’t lie. Before a brutal outing on Monday against Detroit, Quick had gone 9-2-0 with a 1.95 goals against average in 11 games.  He has been terrific as has the rest of the team in front of him!

Betting Prediction: The Phoenix Coyotes are18-11-5 on the road this season but are 8-2 in their last 10 trips to Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Kings are 19-10-1 at home this season and are 11-2-3 in their last 16 games overall.

Phoenix is struggling and the Kings are on fire! LA failed to show up on home ice against the Wings on Monday night – don’t bet on it happening again! With the added firepower of Dustin Penner, Los Angeles appears as though they are ready to take that leap to the next tier of NHL teams. The Coyotes struggles continue!

Pick: Los Angeles Kings -165 and the Over – 5.5 goals
