The Vancouver Canucks return to the scene of Roberto Luongo’s last regulation loss back in early December on Monday night when the struggling St. Louis Blues host the sizzling Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver continues to be the best team in the entire league while the Blues have found themselves plummeting down the Western Conference standings.

The Vancouver Canucks have simply been sensational this season and their stellar play has them with a healthy lead atop of the NHL standings. Need some reasons why? They are #1 in goals for (3.4 goals per game), goals against (2.3 goals per game), #1 on the power play and their penalty killing unit is 38 for 39 in their last 10 games. Despite injuries to three starting defensemen – Alex Edler, Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis, the Canucks withstood a strong charge from another scorching Northwest Division team, the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.

Vancouver’s top ranked offense is no fluke. Everybody knows about the Sedin twins but virtually nobody expected seven goals and seven assists in eight games from Michael Sameulsson. He, Ryan Kesler and Mayson Raymond suddenly look like the best second line in hockey! When the Sedins don’t score on the power play, the second line is likely to convert!

Vancouver’s defense is banged up but is still top ranked thanks largely to Roberto Luongo. He is 6-0-0 with a 1.50 goals against average in his last six games and in his last 21 he is 16-0-5 with a 1.92 goals against average. He’ll get the start on Monday and would love nothing more than to shut down the last team to beat him in regulation.

The St. Louis Blues are a struggling club at the moment and despite the return of some of their injured regulars, they have free fallen down the standings. The Blues are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games and have lost 13 of their last 17 games while giving up an average of 3.5 goals during that span.

St. Louis is 21st in the NHL in goals for, scoring an average of 2.6 goals per game. However, during their recent slide, nobody has been particularly good. Patrik Berglund has 12 points in 12 games, Brad Boyes has three points in two games and TJ Oshie has returned from injury and has two points in two games. The Blues aren’t going to score a lot of goals – it is defense that they rely on…

And defense and goaltending have been an issue as of late. The Blues are 20th in the NHL allowing 2.9 goals per game (3.5 goals per game in their last 17). Early season standout Jaroslav Halak has been brutal and is 1-3-2 with a 3.62 goals against average in his last six starts. In his last two games, Halak has a 4.50 goals against average!

Betting Prediction: The Vancouver Canucks are 35-17 in their last 52 games overall, are 12-4 in their last 16 on the road and are 12-5 in their last 17 games against the Blues. The St. Louis Blues are 2-7 in their last nine games overall and are 2-6 in their last eight games at home.

St. Louis is about to attempt to stop a speeding train with dental floss! Vancouver is superior in every aspect of this game. Even when the Canucks don’t play great, they still win. With HHHHalak struggling in goal and the Blues having issues scoring goals, this is an easy pick.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks -135 and the Over – 5.5 goals
