Let the booing commence! The Leaf nation is absolutely beside themselves and why not? This team was supposed to be better after a “rebuilding year” last season. Instead, an early hot streak has given way to underwhelming and unimpressive play by the Leafs. The good news for Toronto – they face a Canadiens team that played hard and lost on Friday night in Detroit. The other good news – they may just avoid Carey Price who has started in 27 games this season and has won a league high 17.

The Montreal Canadiens are good, top to bottom. They are coming off a loss in a game that they generated 36 shots but ran into a hot Jimmy Howard. They are middle of the pack in goals for in the NHL (2.7 per game) but they are second in goals against (1.9 per game). The Habs have four lines that can do damage and a shutdown defense that is second to one.

Ahhh, the Maple Leafs! Fans are demanding that Ron Wilson get fired. But what about General Manager Brian Burke? This is a team that he has revamped. It is his baby and it is bad! Burke acquisitions Colby Armstrong, Chris Versteeg and Phil Kessel have been absolutely brutal – Armstrong is pointless in four games, Versteeg has two goals on the year and Phil Kessel has scored three times in his last 20 games. The Leafs are 28th in the NFL in goals for, generating only 2.1 goals per game.

The defense has been bad – 22nd in goals against allowing 3.0 goals per game. They are getting no help however – the forwards are a joke!

Betting Prediction:

The Montreal Canadiens have won three of their last four games and are 7-6 on the road this season. The Maple Leafs are 6-18 in their last 24 games overall and have lost two straight.

I shouldn’t have to tell you to never bet on the Leafs, but I will! Not only are they playing badly but they are getting absolutely peppered by the media in the biggest hockey town in Canada (Sorry Montreal and Vancouver). It is not fun to be a Leaf right now and I think that even Canadiens backup goaltender Alex Auld (1-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA) will make the Leafs look bad on Saturday night.

I’m taking the Loser Leafs at the alternate spread of -1 1/2 for a big pay day. 5-2 Leafs. Kessel gets 2 goals.
