There shouldn’t be any trouble for the players to get up for this game as these two teams will meet for the fifth and final time this season. The Blues hold a 3-1 lead in the season series to this point and have had the Avs’ number for the last few years.

Colorado can take some positives out of the fact that they do have a win over the Blues this year and an impressive one at that, shutting the Blues out 5-0 less than a month ago.

Avalanche

It’s definitely been a step backward for the Avs this season, who were the surprise team of the year just a season ago. Coach Patrick Roy looked like a genius transforming what was a bottom feeder in 2012-13 into the Central Division champs in 2013-14. Even last year though when the Avs rolled through mostly everyone in front of them during the regular season, the Blues seemed to have a knack for tripping them up.

The Avs lost the season series last year 3-1 and were outscored 13-5 in their three losses. It’s almost a flip this year where the Avs are not as strong due in part to the departure of players like P.A. Parenteau and Paul Stastny and Semyon Varlamov playing more like a human being most nights, but the Avs have played the Blues very tough. The first two games between these teams went to OT, both ending in 3-2 wins for the Blues, once in a shootout.

The Avs got it right the third time with a 5-0 pummeling of St. Louis, but the Blues restored their pride, shutting Colorado out 3-0 in their most recent tilt.

Colorado has been playing much better hockey of late and are 6-2-2 over their last 10 and despite an awful start, have a realistic chance of chasing down a playoff spot as they’re currently just three points back of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.

Blues

Speaking of playoffs, here’s a team that should have no doubt that they’ll be in the picture come mid-April. The Blues are one of those teams you don’t hear much about, but you just expect them to be good and to be among the elite in the Western Conference.

The Blues have been able to fly a bit under the radar due to the Nashville Predators having a huge turnaround season and the star-studded Chicago Blackhawks garnering a lot of attention of their own in the Central. They’ve quietly been putting together a nice little 7-2-1 run over their last 10 and sit in sixth overall in the NHL in total points at 60. That total is ahead of much more highly touted teams like Pittsburgh, Chicago and Los Angeles.

This team is deep and talented all over the ice with the likes of Vladamir Tarasenko, TJ Oshie, Paul Stastny, Jaden Schwartz and Alex Steen up front, and complimented with young and skilled d-men like Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk. Brian Elliot has been very solid in goal when healthy and leads the NHL in GAA with a 1.90.

Avalanche vs. Blues 4* Free Pick

Both teams are playing good hockey right now and this should be a very entertaining game. The Avs do have the speed and skill to keep St. Louis honest, while the Blues’ depth will force the Avs to be at their best on every shift. In the end I think the depth of the Blues is just going to be too much for Colorado to hang in with and St. Louis wins a close one here. Go with the Blues.
