New Jersey won the first game in the series, a 4-3 victory at home on Tuesday, while Detroit was back in action on Thursday night and fell to Colorado in overtime, 3-2.

The Devils scored four times in that one, and they needed every one of them in a 4-3 win over the Red Wings on Thursday.

The team struck first on a goal by Adam Henrique just 27 seconds into the contest, but wouldn’t find the back of the net again until the third period when Marek Zidlicky notched a power play marker to tie the game at 2-2 just 41 seconds into the frame.

Then, with the score tied 3-3 late in the period, Stephen Gionta scored the eventual game-winner for the Devils with just 37 seconds to play. The win came despite Detroit outshooting New Jersey, 29-23. The win was the third in four games for the Devils since returning from the Olympic break.

Since then, each team added some help up front at the trade deadline. The Red Wings brought in longtime Predators center David Legwand, while the Devils added Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu. Ruutu was a highly touted prospect who never really panned out with Chicago, but the move to Carolina was able to help jumpstart his career.

He’s taken a step backward in recent years, but New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello is hoping that another change of scenery will get Ruutu back on the right track.

As for Legwand, he’ll hope for a better outcome in his second game with his hometown team after he had a minus-2 rating in 16:02 of ice-time in his first game with the Red Wings.

Tuesday’s final score was not indicative of how the game played out. Detroit outplayed New Jersey on the road, and should surely be able to do the same in their own barn. With a few bounces going a little differently, we could end up seeing a different result.

With that said, both teams have been able to find the net with pretty good regularity despite a lack of depth up front, and we could see another shootout on Friday.

The Devils are 1-9 in their last 10 trips to Detroit, and 3-13 in their last 16 games played on a Friday. Additionally, the home team is 15-4-1 in the last 20 meetings between these teams.

The over is 4-0 in the Devils’ last four games overall, and it is 5-2 in the Red Wings’ last seven games against Eastern Conference opponents.

The play: Detroit -115, Over 5
