The Atlanta Thrashers return home on Tuesday night to continue one of the most daunting stretch runs that anyone could have imagined. After losses to Washington and Pittsburgh on the road, the Thrashers will look to tame yet another one of the Eastern Conference elite, the New Jersey Devils.

The New Jersey Devils are in a battle with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Atlantic Division crown and ultimately a top three seed in the Eastern Conference.

They are currently tied with their Atlantic Division foe and need strong performances in their last four games to ensure home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Devils are suffering through a 1-1-2 stretch that has seen them score only six goals, four of which came in their last game against the Hurricanes. Martin Brodeur seems to be back to form after a pre and post Olympic stretch in which he looked ordinary. He has given up two goals in his last three starts.

Zach Parise, Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk recorded two points apiece on Saturday against a very tough Cam Ward, reigniting an offense that appeared to be stalling down the stretch.

The Devils still have a disappointing 22nd ranked offense and need their best players to ramp up and prepare for Eastern Conference teams that will score a lot of goals.

The Atlanta Thrashers improbable playoff run appears to be coming to an end. Not only do they have to beat the Devils on Tuesday night, but they will also have to win against Washington and Pittsburgh to reach the post season. They have slipped to tenth place in the East, three points back of the final playoff position. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

The Thrashers have played the elite Eastern Conference teams well down the stretch but their lack of talent has been exposed by the superior teams. Consecutive one goal losses to Washington and Pittsburgh have the Thrashers on the outside looking in.

With no sustained goal scoring threat, no defensive might to speak of and without quality goaltending, the Thrashers appear to be fading into the NHL sunset. It was an impressive run for Atlanta, but it won’t quite be enough.

The New Jersey Devils are 3-11 in their last 11 road games while the Thrashers are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.

New Jersey has an 8-3 record against the Thrashers in their last 11 meetings.

The Thrashers have run out of gas while the Devils should be motivated to pass their Atlantic Division rivals in the standings.
