It is stretch time in the NHL and while some teams will be looking to advance their playoff seeding, some are simply looking to maintain their place in their Conference standings. Wednesday night’s match between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres is one such game.

The Montreal Canadiens are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference tied with Philadelphia who is idle tonight. A win would put them in sixth place and within two points of fifth. Prior to Montreal’s loss to Ottawa on Monday and their shootout defeat at the hands of Toronto on Saturday, the Canadiens won six straight game. Montreal will be looking to get back in the win column tonight and hope that their recent mini two game slide has gotten the losing out of their systems.

The Montreal Canadiens have gotten the best news that they could hope for. Mike Cammalleri and Marc-Andre Bergeron will return to action tonight and boost an offense that has been just fine in their absences. Cammelleri missed 17 games and still has the team lead in goals. Thomas Plekanek, Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez and the resurgent Kostitsyn boys have filled the offensive void admirably but will no doubt welcome Cammalleri back with open arms.

The Buffalo Sabres stumbled out of the post-Olympic break but have seemed to iron out all of their wrinkles lately. They have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and have won three straight games, all on the road. Now the Sabres return home where they are an impressive 21-9-6. The Sabres look like a lock to win their division and remain the third seed in the East.

Buffalo has not just been relying on goaltender Ryan Miller during their recent 6-3-1 span, they have actually been scoring some goals – they have scored an uncharacteristic 14 goals during their three game win streak. Derek Roy has five points in three games, Tim Kennedy has three points in four games and Tim Connelly has six points in five games. Toni Lydman and Jochen Hecht have been contributing as well. Although both teams are playing well offensively at present, they both live and die by their goaltending. Ryan Miller and Jaroslav Halak have been outstanding of late and have been keeping their teams on the roles that they have been on.

Wednesday night’s matchup should be entertaining. Both teams are on quite a role and both have something to play for. Montreal and Buffalo could easily see each other again in the first round of the playoffs in only a few weeks time so establishing some swagger is important. I like the superior home team in this one although the Canadiens will be bolstered by the return of two regulars tonight.
