Monday night’s matchup is between one team that was supposed to be in the hunt for a Western Conference playoff spot and one team that was supposed to be just average on the season. The Wild are a team the has underachieved this season while the Kings are a team the has exceeded all expectations during their 2009-2010 campaign.

The Los Angeles Kings have been in the mix in the Western Conference all season but they have started to show some cracks since the Olympic break. They are only 5-6-2 since the break including three straight losses. Their goal scoring has dried up and their defensive play has been suspect as demonstrated by their being outscored 11-5 during their losing streak.

They are definitely struggling and need to lean on their quality leadership so they can go on a run, solidify their playoff position and develop some mojo for their first round playoff series.

Ryan Smyth has five points in his last four games, Michael Hanzus has been the only King to show up in the last two games and Anze Kopitar has kept up his solid play. Goaltender Jonathan Quick has struggled lately and needs to get back his swagger or the Kings could be in for a short run in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Minnesota Wild are a team that have been struggling as well. They have lost four of their past six games and are only 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Wild will probably miss the playoffs but will be looking to put on a good show for their loyal hometown fans.

They are 24-10-3 at home but have unfortunately been horrible on the road this season. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

The Wild have not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs just yet but it is inevitable.

Add in the fact that goaltender Nik Backstrom has been disappointing since the Olympic break and the fact that their captain, scoring leader, and heart and soul, Mikko Koivu, figured to miss his third straight game with an arm injury and things look pretty bleak for the Wild.

This is a matchup that is difficult to pick. Both teams are struggling but only one team has something to play for. The Los Angeles Kings, on paper should be the victor in Minnesota as they have won six of the last seven meetings between the two, including three straight in Minnesota.

The domination continues Monday night.
