The Los Angeles Kings and the Dallas Stars face off on Tuesday night in what is the first of many important Western Division games for both teams down the stretch. The Kings have been a pleasant surprise so far and the Stars currently sit in tenth place in the West, two points out of the final playoff spot in the Conference.

Los Angeles has been the overachievers of the West so far along with the Phoenix Coyotes. They have been playing some excellent hockey and are being led offensively by Anze Kopitar who has emerged as one of the elite players in the game. What is different about the Kings of this year as opposed to years past is the leadership qualities of the team. The Kings added Ryan Smith in the off season to compliment the solid guidance of Dustin Brown who is coming off of an impressive Olympic run for Team USA. Jonathan Quick in net has provided the team with a key missing ingredient of solid goaltending as well.

The Kings are a good all around team that seem legit and poised to be playing some meaningful games in the post season.

The Kings are one of a few teams that wish that the Olympic break never happened. Prior to the break, they were 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, with the majority of the wins coming on the road. They are scoring, playing good defense and are getting timely saves from their netminders. Look for the Kings to continue their winning ways on the road in Dallas on Tuesday night. The Dallas Stars are another team that was playing very well before the Olympic break. They were 6-3-1 in their 10 games prior to the break and they were in the midst of a modest two game win streak.

All of the uncertainty in goal seems to have passed and Marty Turco appears that he will stay in Dallas. With the acquisition of Juri Lehtonen, the Stars seem set between the pipes. Mike Ribeiro has played well since his return from injury and rookie Jamie Benn has emerged as a quality center for the club. Veteran leaders Mike Modano and Brad Richards are still a threat to score and they provide the experience necessary for a successful team. Expect the Stars to make a run at the playoffs in the Western Conference, but that run will have to wait another day.

If the Kings can rekindle the fire that they enjoyed before the Olympic break, they will be difficult to stop.
