NHL Free Pick: Los Angeles Kings vs. San Jose Sharks

Uh-oh. It happens several times a year and it’s happening right now. The Sharks are on one of those unstoppable runs, having won eight straight games. With a deadly power play, the league’s leading scorer in Joe Thornton, two possible 50-goal scorers in Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau, not to mention outstanding penalty killing and goaltending, the Sharks are the perfect team (in the regular season). Even the emerging Kings have a tall order tonight.
The Kings do their damage thanks to depth and extremely balanced scoring; nine of their players have eight or more goals this season. They’re 2-0-1 against San Jose and have proven that the big boys don’t scare them anymore. I don’t like their chances tonight, however. First off, as tempting as an upset pick over the Sharks is, chances are they’ll keep winning; the streak has to end at some point but that’s unlikely to happen on home ice. Secondly, after tonight’s road game, the Kings head back to Staples Center for a cushy six-game home stand that includes two matchups against San Jose. I have a feeling they’ll get caught feeling homesick and looking ahead to their fun schedule. Bet on the sharper, hotter Sharks.

A few weeks back the Kings were neck in neck with the Sharks, but San Jose is currently playing their best hockey of the season. Right now San Jose is too much for L.A. to handle so I’m taking the Sharks as well -210.
