A Carolina/Edmonton matchup usually doesn’t attract much interest but, in the betting world, it makes for a close and exciting matchup of bottom dwellers. Despite their closeness at the bottom of the NHL standings, however, these two teams are going in opposite directions. After a turbulent first half, the Hurricanes are finally showing signs of life. Eric Staal has been on fire of late, especially on the power play. Cam Ward’s injury seems to be behind him and he’s looking more consistent in goal.
Underrated defender Joni Pitkanen leads the NHL in ice time and has quietly scored at close to a point-per-game clip over his last 25 or so games.
The Oilers, on the other hand, are the NHL’s sorriest franchise at the moment. Armed with too many smallish, speedy finesse forwards and not enough grit, they may be hockey’s most one-dimensional team . Jeff Deslauriers has not been the answer in goal and Sheldon Souray, who the Oilers hoped could be a useful trading chip, broke his hand on Saturday night, damaging if not destroying altogether his value. The Oil are totally broken, both mentally and physically, whereas the Hurricanes are building momentum. I like them to prolong Edmonton’s misery tonight.
