Brodeur Only Two Wins Behind The NHL’s All Time Leader Patrick Roy

If everything goes according to plan this week then New Jersey Devils veteran goalie Martin Brodeur will ironically enough have a chance this Saturday in Montreal to tie Patrick Roy’s record for all time wins by an NHL goalie.

Brodeur who was stellar on Tuesday night in making 35 saves in a 3-2 win at home against the Calgary Flames, now has 549 career wins which is only two shy of Roy who played part of his storied Hall Of Fame career with the Montreal Canadiens.

“I think for people around me, they feel it’s a great story,” Brodeur who is from Montreal said about the prospects of tying Roy’s mark in Montreal. “It’s still alive. I have a chance and there is one more game to go.”

That one game Brodeur was referring to will come on Thursday when the four time Vezina Trophy winner who has won four of five games since returning from a four month hiatus due to an elbow injury faces the Phoenix Coyotes.

If he wins that game then it’s a guarantee that the Molson Centre in Montreal will be sold out and buzzing as the 15 year veteran gets that first opportunity to make some history by tying Roy at 551 wins.

What makes this 36 year old such a quality goalie is his ability to rebound after bad games. That was seen last weekend after Brodeur was yanked in what was a 7-3 road loss against the New York Islanders.

“I worked hard in practice on a couple of little things like my balance,” said Brodeur. “In

Long Island my balance was not great and I worked on it.”
In Tuesday night’s win, the Devils were lights out in penalty killing as they killed off six of seven power plays in a game that Brodeur called one of his toughest challenge since being back.

“The type of game as far as the quantity of shots and the power play time we had to spend killing six or seven penalties, I think the playing and the feeling were a little different than the other ones,” said Brodeur.

As the clock ticked down, the fans stood and began chanting in unison “Marty, Marty, Marty” in paying respect to one of the greatest goalies to ever play in the NHL.
