The Senators beat the Devils 5-2 at Canadian Tire Centre on Oct. 17 in their only meeting of the year.

The Ottawa Senators keep plodding their way through winter. They are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games and have been unable to get on any sort of roll all season long. The offense doesn’t seem to be much of a problem – the team is averaging 2.80 goals per game this year – but they are allowing 3.09 goals per game – the reason they are a sub .500 team as Christmas approaches.

They are coming off a nice win against St. Louis – one of the best teams in the NHL however.

Bobby Ryan has three multipoint games in his past five for the Senators, Kyle Turris has four assists in the past three games, Erik Karlsson has two points in two games and Cory Conacher has three points in four games.

But there are more struggling players than surging ones on the Sens roster – Milan Michalek is pointless in three games, Clarke MacArthur hasn`t hit the score sheet in four games, Colin Greening is pointless in five games and Chris Phillips hasn`t recorded a point in seven games.

Robin Lehner got the win in Ottawa`s last game meaning that Craig Anderson should get the start Wednesday. Anderson is 1-0-0 with a 2.81 GAA and .933 save percentage in his last two appearances.

The New Jersey Devils have struggled as well and is the goaltending and defense that has let the team down. New Jersey is allowing just 2.35 goals against this year but Martin Brodeur, who should get the start Wednesday, has not looked great. He is 2-3-0 in his last five games played with a 3.04 GAA and .874 save percentage. He hasn’t recorded a win against Ottawa in his last four attempts but is coming off a 3-0 shutout win against Tampa Bay on Saturday.

At least the Devils have a strong forward line working for them at the moment. Jaromir Jagr leads New Jersey with 28 points to go with a plus-11 rating for a team that has struggled offensively. Line mate Dainius Zubrus’ plus-12 leads the team. Zubrus has three goals and two assists during a four-game point streak while Jagr has six assists in his last four games and line mate Travis Zajac has also played well.

Forward Damien Brunner has three goals in as many games and is the only other Hot Devil at the moment.

A few trends to consider:
• Over is 21-4-1 in OTT last 26 Wed. games.
• OTT are 2-6 in their last 8 Wed. games.
• Under is 15-6-6 in NJ last 27 home games.
• Under is 28-13-14 in NJ last 55 overall.
• Home team is 11-4 in the last 15 meetings.
• OTT are 3-8 in the last 11 meetings in New Jersey.

The Ottawa Senators have had a difficult time in New Jersey – just three wins in their last 11 trips but the Devils are banged up and rather inconsistent right now. I like the Sens to build of the Character win against the Blues – their offense is better and their goaltending is much more reliable right now.

It likely won’t be pretty but the Sens should win their second straight for the first time in more than six weeks.

Pick: Ottawa Senators +110
