Matchup | *Insiders* Preview

The Sabres are 2-8-0 in their last 10 overall with seven straight regulation losses while the Oilers are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games and have been getting it done in both ends of the rink. Edmonton beat the lowly Sabres in the only meeting of the season – 3-2 February 3.

If things couldn`t get any worse for Ted Nolan and the Buffalo Sabres, it looks as though they will go with their fifth starting goaltender of the season – fifth!

Matthew Hackett will get the call – he had a 3.07 GAA games in 33 games in the ALH before the call-up – ugh!

The Buffalo Sabres brought virtually nothing in a 3-1 loss to Calgary Tuesday – they had just 14 shots on goal. Jamie McBain is pointless in eight games and Matt D`Agostini is pointless in nine. Drew Stafford has five points (four goals, one assist) in the past six games – he is about all that Buffalo has going for it.

The Edmonton Oilers have turned the corner and it all starts with defense and goaltending. Ben Scrivens and Victor Fasth have formed a decent duo in Edmonton – Fasth is 2-0-1 in his last three games while giving up five goals over that span while Thursday night`s projected started Ben Scrivens is 6-4-0 with a 2.40 goals-against average in his last 10 starts.

Good numbers considering the Oiler are among the worst in the league at goals against – 3.17 per game.

Along with the better defense has come a bit of an uptick offensively as well.

Sam Gagner has nine points (two goals, nine assists) in the past eight games for the Oilers, Taylor Hall has 31 points in 30 games, Jordan Eberle has three points in two games and Justin Schultz and David Perron each have two points in two games.

A few trends to consider:
• Under is 7-1-1 in BUF last 9 overall.
• Under is 9-3-3 in BUF last 15 Thu. games.
• BUF are 8-22 in their last 30 Thu. games.
• Under is 10-4-1 in EDM last 15 overall.
• EDM are 27-57 in their last 84 Thu. games.

All the Edmonton Oilers needed was a little goaltending to keep them in games.

They are a better team than their record indicates. They are 3-1-1 in the past five games at Rexall Place and should display some mojo Thursday night The Oilers have a little optimism going forward – the Sabres don’t.

Pick: Edmonton Oilers -191
