Avalanche vs. Blackhawks NHL Spread/Handicapping

Headline: Rivalry Night – Blackhawks Try to Extend History – Host Avs Wednesday Night

The Chicago Blackhawks continue their assault on the record books Wednesday when they hope to extend their streak to 24 games to start the season without a regulation time loss. They are now just six contests away from matching the longest point streak in league history set by the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers, who went unbeaten in 35 straight games (25-0-10).

Standing in their way is the Colorado Avalanche who have fallen on hard times lately – a 1-2-3 record in their last six games. Both teams will make the quick turnaround – both played to opposite results on Tuesday night.

The Colorado Avalanche have lost three straight games including a 2-1 loss to Detroit last night heading into Wednesday’s encounter – not a good sign when faced with trying stop one of the most impressive streaks of all time in the NHL.

They are one of the league’s worst road teams (2-7-3) and they have not tasted victory in their last six away from Pepsi Center (0-3-3).

Ryan O’Reilly is back in the fold, Gabriel Landeskog is healthy again names like Matt Duchene, PA Parenreau and Paul Stastny should have this club over .500 but Colorado just can’t seem to get over the offensive hump. They average just 2.38 goals per game – not horrible but not nearly good when…

The Avalanche surrender an average of 2.90 goals per game. Although the offense has been meager this season, the defense and goaltending has been the main issue for Colorado. The Avs are a miserable 77.8% on the penalty kill and neither goaltender has a GAA under 2.70. Semyon Varlamov will likely be in net on Wednesday – he won two of three decisions and secured a shutout versus Chicago last year.

The wins just coming for the Chicago Blackhawks – they proved that they are a complete team in a 5-3 win over the Wild last night. Bryan Bickell registered his first career two-goal performance and rookie Brandon Saad notched a goal and two assists in the Blackhawks’ latest triumph while Patrick Kane continues to be a force for the Blackhawks, leading the team with 12 goals and 27 points.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

The right wing has one goal in each of the last two games, and netted the decisive shootout attempt in Sunday’s 2-1 victory at Detroit. Overall this team is averaging 3.13 goals per game and they are allowing just 1.78 goals per game.

While the offense of the Hawks has stolen most of the headlines, the defense and goaltending have been terrific all season. It shouldn’t matter who plays between the pipes – Corey Crawford has a sterling 1.53 GAA this year and Ray Emery has a very good 2.02 GAA. Things are clearly going well for the Blackhawks at the moment – there is absolutely no weakness on this team.

Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:
• COL are 3-13 in their last 16 road games.
• Under is 10-3-1 in CHI last 14 home games.
• Under is 19-7-1 in CHI last 27 overall.
• CHI are 38-16 in their last 54 overall.
• COL are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
• Over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

Chicago’s 43 points are 10 more than the next closest team in the NHL (Anaheim) – nobody is close! There doesn’t seem to be a whole lotta faith that the Avs will break the Hawks streak tonight – look at the odds. Count me in as one of those that believe that Colorado has little or no chance. I love the Hawks tonight – I would like a little bigger payday though!

Pick: Chicago Blackhawks -214
