2013 NHL Power Rankings – Betting on NHL?

Dave B’s NHL Power Rankings – Nov 11, 2013

Two more weeks of NHL action is in the books – time to look at the risers and the fallers. A new top dog has emerged on the heels of a five game win streak while a few former top 5 teams have tumbled down the Rankings due to some recent unflattering play.

Let’s break it all down in Dave B’s bi-weekly edition of the NHL Power Rankings

1. Anaheim Ducks (Two Weeks Ago: 5)

Sit on top of the NHL standings and are riding a five game win streak. They beat the Canucks Sunday night to remain a perfect 8-0 on home ice. Anaheim is as deep and balanced as any team in the league right now and even Dustin Penner looks like a star! He has 12 points in 12 games for the Ducks.

2. Colorado Avalanche (Two Weeks Ago: 2)

Are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and still have just 2 losses on the year. Colorado is 6-0 on the road this year as well and has a league leading +26 goal differential.

3. Chicago Blackhawks (Two Weeks Ago: 7)

The defending champs are riding a three game win streak and are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games overall.

The Hawks started a bit slowly this year but was there any doubt they would rise to the top before too long?

4. St. Louis Blues (Two Weeks Ago: 6)

The Blues have only played 15 games on the season and still sit in sixth overall in the standings. They too have won three straight (one against Pittsburgh) and are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. Alex Steen continues to lead the way – unbelievable.

5. Tampa Bay Lightning (Two Weeks Ago: 10)

Had won four straight games and were 8-2 in their last 10 games overall – they lead the Eastern Conference! Goaltender Ben Bishop continues to be a difference maker on this team – we never had any fears about the offense – defense and goaltending has always been the issue in Tampa.
***Update – The Lightning lost 3-0 to Boston Monday and lot Steve Stamkos to a broken leg***

6. Phoenix Coyotes (Two Weeks Ago: 8)

Still top 5 in the NHL overall standings and beat Vancouver last week. They did lose to Anaheim – no shame in that but are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games overall.

7. San Jose Sharks (Two Weeks Ago: 1)

Have not played well most recently – losers of five straight including a shootout loss to the lowly Sabres. They also looked pretty bad against a Vancouver team they have owned the last couple of seasons in San Jose last week. The Sharks are 4-2-4 in their last 10 and are struggling in every aspect of the game right now.

8. Minnesota Wild (Two Weeks Ago: 11)

Have played very well lately – 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and they have an unlikely hero to thank. Goaltender Josh Harding is 9-2-2 on the year with a .947 save percentage. Minnesota has a knack of not living up to expectation – not so far this year!

9. Boston Bruins (Two Weeks Ago: 4)

Boston has only played 16 games so far this year and sport an impressive +15 goal differential in those games. They are 6-3-1 in their last 10 overall and despite slipping in the Rankings are still one of the best the league has to offer.

10. LA Kings (Two Weeks Ago: 13)

Had a slow start to the season but are rounding into form despite injuries to Jeff Carter and Jarrett Stoll. Destroying the Vancouver Canucks Saturday opened a few eyes – the recent play of Jonathan Quick has as well – he has allowed one goal in his last two games and has stopped 44 of 45 shots over that span.

11. Pittsburgh Penguins (Two Weeks Ago: 12)

Not sure what to make of the Penguins. They have lost two straight and are just 5-5 in their last 10 games overall. With the talent on this team we expect – no – we demand MORE!

12. Vancouver Canucks (Two Weeks Ago: 3)

Return home after dropping three of four on the road. They are ninth in the league standings but have played 20 games – two or three more games than everyone else in the league. Still, they have been getting some secondary scoring – it’s not all in the Sedins this tear.

13. Toronto Maple Leafs (Two Weeks Ago: 9)
14. Detroit Red Wings (Two Weeks Ago: 14)
15. Ottawa Senators (Two Weeks Ago: 20)
16. Washington Capitals (Two Weeks Ago: 16)
17. New York Rangers (Two Weeks Ago: 26)
18. Montreal Canadiens (Two Weeks Ago: 15)
19. Dallas Stars (Two Weeks Ago: 18)
20. Nashville Predators (Two Weeks Ago: 21)
21. Winnipeg Jets (Two Weeks Ago: 23)
22. Carolina Hurricanes (Two Weeks Ago: 24)
23. New Jersey Devils (Two Weeks Ago: 27)
24. Philadelphia Flyers (Two Weeks Ago: 25)
25. New York Islanders (Two Weeks Ago: 17)
26. Columbus Blue Jackets (Two Weeks Ago: 19)
27. Calgary Flames (Two Weeks Ago: 22)
28. Edmonton Oilers (Two Weeks Ago: 29)
29. Florida Panthers (Two Weeks Ago: 28)
30. Buffalo Sabres (Two Weeks Ago: 30)
