Canucks vs. Kings Game 6 Preview

The Vancouver Canucks will look to build upon their dominant Game 5 performance in order to oust the Los Angeles Kings in Game 6 of their Western Conference series. This series has not been short on emotion and Sunday’s game should be no different.

The Vancouver Canucks proved that they are the better overall team on Friday night. They completely man handled the Los Angeles Kings en route to a convincing 7-2 victory. The Canucks had the edge in offense, defense, goaltending and even the fights that took place during the spirited third period.

Michael Sameulsson keeps lighting it up and had another two goals on Friday to take his league leading total to seven, the resurgent Pavol Demitra had a goal and two assist, light scoring Steve Bernier had two goals and a host of other Canucks, including the Sedins has points in the whitewash.

Roberto Luongo was sharp in Game 5 and put to rest any of the concerns that the Canuck Nation had about his focus and drive to win. The defense only allowed two goals and 26 shots against a team that had been pressing all series. The Canucks looked fresh and if their energy level stays at the same level, they are going to be difficult to stop on Sunday night.

The Los Angeles Kings got slaughtered.  Although it might be better than losing a 3-2 in a heartbreaking overtime game, it was still a bad loss at a bad time of the season. Coach Andy Murray blamed the goaltending and he might be onto something. Seven goals on 30 shots isn’t good.

Perhaps a better explanation for the Kings’ collapse was the discipline that the Canucks showed, the poise of their penalty kill and ultimately, the failure of the Kings power play to shift momentum. The Kings had been 9 for 17 with the man advantage in the series, but have struggled with just one goal in their last eight attempts with the man advantage.

The Kings were totally taken out of their game on Friday and unless they can regain their form, this series is over! Anze Kopitar, Ryan Smyth, Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson went pointless is Game 5. Has the clock struck midnight on the Cinderella Kings? Has the Vancouver coaching staff finally figured out how to neutralize the Kings attack? Or have the Canucks penalty killers woken up from their series long slumber?

The Canucks look awfully good at the moment and the Kings don’t. The home team is 9-3 in the last 12 games but Vancouver is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings. Look for the Canucks to keep the momentum rolling and eliminate the Kings in a very competitive game.
