One of the Western Conference finalists has already been determined. The San Jose Sharks will be looking to punch their ticket to Vancouver in Game 6 of their semi-final series with Detroit while the Wings will be looking to extend the series one more game. History is clearly against the Wings coming back from a 3-0 deficit but there is no denying that momentum is clearly on their side.

San Jose played a very good Game 5 and probably deserved to put the series to bed on Sunday night. They outshot the Wings 42-22 in that game but suffered a demoralizing third period meltdown. Keep in mind that San Jose had been 10-2 in their previous 12 games against Detroit before Detroit’s mini two game win streak.

Offensively, the Sharks will be fine. Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi and Logan Couture scored on Sunday night and Ryan Clowe, arguably San Jose’s MVP tallied another point. San Jose has generated at least 37 shots on goal in every game but one in the series so far – if Jimmy Howard is just average or if the Sharks can bury just one more chance they will have a good chance of eliminating the pesky Wings.

Antti Niemi gave up three goals on six shots in the third period of Game 5 and looked shaky while giving up four goals on just 22 shots. He will be under siege at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday and will absolutely have to be better.

The battered and bruised Wings will have some injury concerns going into Game 6 – Pavel Datsyuk has a significant hand injury and likely won’t be taking faceoffs again and Johan Franzen has a balky ankle. Paging Mike Modano – a fairy tale could be in the works!

Detroit has looked like a much better team in the last three, winning two, but they have still been largely outplayed in four of the five games so far. Jimmy Howard has been exceptional and in Game 5 he did what some including myself thought was unlikely – he stole a game for the Wings. If Howard is on top of his game Detroit is a scary team.

NHL Betting Trends:
Over is 12-2-2 in SJ last 16 road games.
SJ are 10-3 in their last 13 vs. Central.
Over is 16-6-2 in SJ last 24 overall.
Over is 12-2 in DET last 14 vs. Western Conference.
Over is 9-2 in DET last 11 overall.
Over is 7-2 in DET last 9 vs. Pacific.
SJ are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
Over is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.

Betting Prediction: Will it be the “chokers” or the “NHL Royalty” that prevails on Tuesday night? It’s hard to bet against the experience of the Wings, the solid play of Pavel Datsyuk, Nick Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg and the uber-hot play of Jimmy Howard right now particularly since this game will be in Detroit where the Wings played very well in the two previous games of the series. The Wings have their swagger back and should force a Game 7 in this intriguing series.

The Over is definitely a play here too – it is 12-2-2 in San Jose’s last 16 road games and is 7-0 in Detroit’s last seven home games. The Over is 16-6-2 in San Jose’s last 24 games overall and is 9-2 in Detroit’s last 11 games overall. The Over is also 10-4 in the last 14 meetings between the two clubs.

Pick: Detroit Red Wings -140 and the Over – 5.5 goals
