Sabres vs. Bruins Preview – Bruins lead series 3-2

The Sabres/Bruins series has gone pretty much as expected – close games, modest scoring – but most of us figured Buffalo would have Boston on the ropes by now, not vise versa.

The Sabres jumped out to a 3-1 series stranglehold through four games, largely because goaltender Tuukka Rask played well enough to neutralize the usual advantage that Ryan Miller gives Buffalo in goal.

In Game 4’s double-overtime finish, Rask went save for save with Miller until Miroslav Satan tucked home the winning goal.

Boston earned its series advantage not just with timely saves from Rask but also by being the physical aggressor. Zdeno Chara has been a terror in the series, laying the body and potting some crucial goals with his have shot from the point.

In Game 5, however, the Sabres showed why they were the higher seed entering this series. They used their superior speed and finesse up front to skate circles around the Bruin defense and beat Rask three times before following up with an empty-netter.

The question is whether or not they can duplicate that effort in a hostile, intimidating road environment at Boston’s TD Garden.

It’s a tall order but I see the Sabres scraping by on the skin of their teeth tonight. First off, there’s a great chance that they’ll get Thomas Vanek back from his high ankle sprain tonight. Boston hopes for Marc Savard (concussion) to return but he’s far less likely to get clearance. Secondly, even though the Bruins will get very physical with Buffalo tonight, there’s the Ryan Miller factor.

Rask has been great but, fact of the matter is, Miller was the league’s best goalie this season. There’s no one better at stealing a game right now.

I don’t expect Buffalo to be the better team overall tonight – Boston will just be too amped up at home – but I expect Miller to stand on his head early against Boston’s subpar attack.

That will buy the Sabres enough time to score a goal or two, and that should be enough for a victory.

Pick the Sabres to win a thriller and force Game 7.
