Devils vs. Flyers Preview

The impossible is becoming to look more look the probable in the first round series between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey Devils. The Flyers needed a point in their last regular season game to qualify for the post season and now they are on the verge of eliminating the second seed in the Eastern Conference and a sexy pick to go to the Stanley Cup Final.

New Jersey is getting outplayed in every aspect of the game by the Flyers – yes, even in goal!

The Philadelphia Flyers went into Game 4 with a 2-1 series lead despite two of their offensive studs being held pointless. Jeff Carter and Daniele Briere woke up on Tuesday night and served notice that they were going to be factors in the series before its end.

They each recorded their first points of the series on Tuesday night and did it with three points apiece.

With Carter, Briere and Mike Richards playing well, the Flyers suddenly have a very potent offensive attack and with tough guy Dan Carcillo chipping in with another goal on Tuesday, the sky appears to be the limit for this squad.

Defensively, the Flyers have been better than advertised. We all knew that Chris Pronger was going to be a force but his supporting cast has been just as impressive. Goaltender Brian Boucher has been solid, to the absolute delight of Flyer fans, but is it just a matter of time before the wheels come off his bus?

The New Jersey Devils look like they are stuck in the mud at present. Although they did manage more than the 19 shots on goal that they got in game 3, the 28 game 4 shots rarely tested the Flyers keeper.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored his third goal of the playoffs but it wasn’t nearly enough. Martin Brodeur certainly is not the problem for Jersey, he’s been spectacular.

The Devils are on the ropes but they are a team that tends to respond well to adversity. New Jersey has been terrible on the road this season and in their last 22 road games, they are a dismal 5-17.

Three goals in the last two games just aren’t going to cut it! Fortunately for the Devils, they return home Thursday where they are a completely different team.

The Flyers have won three straight games in the series and roll into Jersey with a lot of momentum.

The Devils are not ready to give up quite yet and should perform well for what may be the last time in front of their home town crowd.

Look for Marty to shine and the offense to do just enough to win Game 5.
