Stanley Cup Finals Prediction

Game 5 is on tap for the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals, and if I were you I’d bet on the Penguins to keep the momentum going and pull off the upset…

Stanley Cup Final – Pittsburgh Penguins @ Detroit Red Wings

Game 5 – Saturday, June 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET
NHL betting favorite: Red Wings -155

From a potential sweep to a classic – that’s the type of turnaround we’ve seen in Stanley Cup betting over the last couple of games. The Red Wings are tiring, struggling to keep up with the bigger, younger, more physical Pens.Henrik Zetterberg in particular eased up on Sidney Crosby in Game 4, and Sid the Kid went off as a result, scoring the game winner and setting up a beautiful insurance goal by Tyler Kennedy. Pavel Datsyuk’s absence has had a ripple effect on Detroit’s scoring and backchecking, but the Wings can’t blame his injury for everything. The bottom line is that the Wings’ snipers have to step up; Marian Hossa is looking for his first goal of the series and Tomas Holmstrom, often the X-Factor for the Wings in the playoffs, has gone a whopping 16 games without a goal.

Even though Detroit has the luxury of playing back at Joe Louis Arena, Pittsburgh could steal one Saturday night. They’re playing with confidence and no one can stop Evgeni Malkin right now; he has seven points in four games so far this series and should find the net again in Game 5. Bet on the Penguins to keep the momentum going and pull off the upset.

Good theory. Excpet for one thing. Pavel Datsyuk returns for Game 5. LET’S GO RED WINGS!!!

Home ice has been the dominant factor in this series and the Red Wings confirmed this with a convincing victory in game 5. If things hold true to form, Detroit will be hoisting the Cup after a game 7 victory at home.
