Sharks vs. Avalanche Preview – Colorado leads Series 2-1

The ghost of playoffs past appears to be rearing its ugly head once again for the San Jose Sharks. Despite being the better team in Game 3 of the series, the Sharks find themselves down 2-1 and on the verge of a nearly insurmountable 3-1 series deficit.

They will try once again on Tuesday night to solve Craig Anderson and the Colorado Avalanche in order to get back in the series and regain home ice advantage.

If the San Jose Sharks are a little nervous and are squeezing their sticks a little tighter on Tuesday night, there is good reason. They threw everything at the Avalanche on Sunday and were unable to generate the ONE GOAL in regulation that it would have taken to regain home ice advantage.

San Jose, despite the premature eulogies being read throughout the NHL communities, are not out of this series by a long shot.

The Sharks did do some good things in Game 3, but they were overshadowed by Craig Anderson and Lady Luck. Ryane Clowe, and Devin Setoguchi each registered eight shots on goal, Manny Malhotra (who played for injured Dany Heatley) registered seven shots and three Sharks had five shots each.

The offense was there, the finish wasn’t. The defense was good as well – the Sharks gave up only 17 shots on net and Evgeni Nabokov stopped all of the Colorado chances. He just couldn’t stop his own team’s shots on goal!

The Colorado Avalanche can thank the Hockey Gods and Craig Anderson for their 2-1 series lead.

The Hockey Gods guided Dan Boyle’s pass behind Evgeni Nabokov on Sunday. Craig Anderson made 51 – that’s right 51 saves.

That makes a total of 97 saves that Anderson has made in the last two games and a .946 save percentage in the three games so far.

Offensively and defensively, there is not much to talk about for the Avalanche. Craig Anderson has been the team! Milan Hejduk was injured in Game 3 and might not suit up on Tuesday leaving an already shaky offensive attack even more meagre.

The Hockey Gods have appeared in the last two games of this series – once for the Sharks (tying goal with 1.41 left in the third period of game 2, then the OT winner) and once for the Avs (Dan Boyle’s own goal in Game 3).

It is San Jose’s turn to take advantage of the Divine intervention that appears to be ruling this series.
