The closeness of the series may not be all that surprising but what is a shock is the fact that Boston’s second ranked regular season offense has generated just two goals on rookie goaltender Brayden Holtby thus far.
The Boston Bruins haven`t looked all that bad so far in the two games of the series but they have been anything but dominant. The Bruins won Game 1 largely due to an offensive presence that was sadly lacking in Game 2. Credit the Capitals’ attention to defense to some extent but don`t think that Boston isn`t capable of a much better effort in the offensive zone.
Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Tyler Seguin, Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci and Zdeno Chara are inexplicably pointless through two games – it`s difficult to think that this trend will continue!
Tim Thomas has been solid so far as has Boston`s defense so far. No need to change things up in the defensive zone – the onus is on Boston`s offense to be better!
The Washington Capitals have been patient and they have been solid defensively so far in the series – nobody could have seen that coming. The Capitals, like the Bruins have scored just two goals in the two games so far with Alex Ovechkin recording just one assist. [ad-4437448]
Like the Bruins offense, the Caps are going to have to find another gear in order to take the lead in the series on Monday night.
Washington was 15th in goals for this season which makes a strong defensive effort going forward that much more imperative.
Brayden Holtby came into the playoffs as Washington`s third string goaltender behind Thomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth and yet he has been the star of the series so far. Do I think his strong play will continue Perhaps.
Do I think that he will continue to be the difference for the Capitals? Likely not!
Betting Prediction: Boston is 3-7 in their last 10 trips to Washington. The Washington Capitals have played what amounts to two perfect games in the series so far. But with next to no room for error, their luck may come to an end on Monday night.
When push comes to shove, the Bruins are a much better team in all areas of the game. Expect the Bruins to go back to the drawing board and to come bring a better effort on Monday night. Credit the Capitals but watch the real Bruins show up on Monday.
