Coyotes vs. Red Wings Preview
Pretty fun hockey game on Friday night. It is nice to see the people in Arizona supporting their team and that the team is supporting their fans with a fast paced brand of hockey.
It looked for a while like the Coyotes were going to take a 2-0 series lead, then the Red Wings woke up and took over.
The Detroit Red Wings flexed a little bit of muscle on National TV on Friday night. A 7-4 victory is quite a statement against a team that had gone 37-16 on home ice in the last 53 games.
The Wings now return home to a Joe Louis crowd that will be ready, primed and fired up about their Wings gaining home ice advantage with their Friday night win.
The Red Wings got contributions from just about everybody on their roster on Friday night. Led by Henrik Zetterberg’s hat trick, the Wings got multiple point efforts from Valtteri Filppula (two goals and an assist) and Nicklas Kronwall and Todd Bertuzzi (two assists each).
38 shots on goal on Friday night makes a two game total of 78 shots on Ilya Bryzgalov.
Full marks for the Wings for the win – they solved Bryzgalov and gained a little swagger with the win.
The Phoenix Coyotes played pretty well as well. They matched the Wings goal for goal, shot for shot and hit for hit for two and a half periods before eventually letting the game slip away. After scoring three power play goals in Game 1, the Coyotes were unable to score with the man advantage in Game 2.
A timely power play goal scored and the outcome could have been much different.
Trade deadline Wojtek Wolski led the charge offensively for the Coyotes with one goal and one assist with Coyotes veteran and inspirational leader Shane Doan matching that output. Matthew Lombardi scored and Keith Yandle kept the Phoenix defensive corp. active on the score sheet.
The Phoenix Coyotes appeared to get a little carried away after a second period four minute span in which five goals were scored. They were totally taken out of their game as they tried to play a run and gun style with a superior offensive team. Look for the Coyotes to slow the game down and be more deliberate.
If they can do this, they should have a chance on the road. If they continue to free wheel, the Wings will have a decided advantage.
Eleven goals were scored on Friday night. Expect a lower scoring game in which a solid game plan is replaces unadulterated enthusiasm.
This is Detroit’s time of year, just ask the Hockeytown faithful. I expect a close game with the Wings improving upon their 7-1 record at home against the Coyotes in their last eight meetings.
