Devils vs. Flyers Preview

If you haven’t yet seen a game in this series – shame on you! This may be the most highly contested series of all of the first round matchups.

The teams are very familiar with each other and can’t stand one another. A series split is a little flattering for a Philadelphia team that won despite being outplayed in Game 1 and got outplayed and lost in Game 2.

The New Jersey Devils earned a split of Friday night but they have to be thinking that they deserved better. Although they gave up only fourteen shots in Game 1, the Devils were on the wrong end of a 2-1- score.

Friday night’ effort was much better in which New Jersey was able to use their speed, demonstrate their grit and bury their chances.

Ilya Kovalchuk, who was largely invisible in Game 1 showed up in Game 2 in a bad mood. He played with an edge rarely seen from the Russian sniper and was able to tally one goal and two assists. His play is good news for the New Jersey Devils going forward. If he is on top of his game, the Devils will be difficult to stop.

Patrik Elias added three assists and Zach Parise recorded one goal and one assist. The Devils best players were their best players.

It was nice to see a little support for Martin Brodeur who was his typical solid self.

The Philadelphia Flyers return home on Sunday evening where they are much better than they are on the road. A split on the road to a sub-.500 road team has to be deemed a success.

The Flyers were able to up their emotional element in New Jersey and as long as the games are spirited affairs, the Flyers know that they have a chance.

Claude Giroux was the offensive leader for the Flyers in Game 2 but their best player has been Mike Richards who followed up his one goal one assist effort in Game 1 with two assists in Game 2.

Jeff Carter has been invisible in the series thus far and will have to be better if the Flyers are to have a chance.

Game 3 should be full of intrigue just like the other two. For the New Jersey Devils, if they stay out of the penalty box, they should be fine. The Flyers have scored three of their five goals in the series with the man advantage. For the Flyers, Jeff Carter needs to wake up, the defense in front of Brian Boucher needs to be better and they need to generate more shots at Martin Brodeur.

New Jersey is 5-15 in their last 20 games on the road and Philadelphia is 15-6 in their last 21 home games. Advantage – Philadelphia.
