All of the talk about the experience and depth advantage that the Chicago Blackhawks enjoyed came to life in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final – Chicago never panicked and utilized two late third period goals by a couple of roll players to secure a 2-1 victory. Teuvo Teravainen and Antoine Vermette scored less than two minutes apart late in the third period to help the Blackhawks to the win Wednesday at Amalie Arena – a scary sign for the home team. Will Tampa Bay be able to bounce back from a disheartening loss or was Game 1 just a sign of things to come? Let’s take a look.

Well, it took a while for the coffee to kick in for the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night but when it finally did they looked awfully dangerous as they dominated the third period en route to the win. What’s impressive about Chicago’s Game 1 win is the fact that the superstars did little damage and that the supporting cast was the difference in the game.

Teuvo Teravainen and Antoine Vermette each scored on Wednesday night – in a span of two minutes to take the Hawks over the top. With the third line of Patrick Sharp, Vermette, and Teravainen catching fire, the Blackhawks are poised to be a dangerous club heading into Game 2.

Patrick Kane who has 10 goals in the playoffs and Jonathan Toews were bottled up by Tampa’s defensive corp. in Game 1 but nobody expects that to continue throughout the series. Chicago’s top two lines entered the series too Hot to be held down – expect better from the Big Guns on Saturday night.

The Tampa Bay Lightning played extremely well through the first two periods of Game 1 – they held the Blackhawks to just 13 shots on goal but sat back and assumed a defensive posture in the third. It turns out that it was precisely the wrong strategy for the Lightning. Tampa had just five shots in the third – only two in the first 16 minutes! They simply gave Game 1 away.

Consider Game 1 a huge lesson for the young and largely inexperienced Lightning – they did control the action for the bulk of the game and outshot the Blackhawks 24-11 in the first period. Tampa’s speed, intensity and relentlessness give the Lightning a glimmer of hope for Game 2 – they just need to keep the foot on the pedal throughout.

Alex Killorn, who scored Tampa Bay’s goal and Steven Stamkos each registered five shots apiece – they were dominant at times. Just like in the case of Chicago’s top contributors, we can’t expect the likes of “The Triplets” line to be held down for much longer – Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov combined for just two shots in Game 1. Not great considering the three have been responsible for over half of Tampa’s postseason goals

We can’t really blame Ben Bishop for the Game 1 loss – he was OK between the pipes and his defense did a terrific job against the skilled top 2 lines of the Blackhawks.

Holding the Hawks studs in check usually means an automatic win- unless you just don’t show up in the third period!
