Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final ended the way that every series that the Canucks have played in so far in the postseason – a shutout win on home ice. Now the Boston Bruins are faced with the task of trying to bite back in British Columbia in order to return home with a split. The oddsmakers are obviously still in love with Vancouver -190 and they realize now that goaltending is going to dominate this series (5 goal Total).

For the Boston Bruins, they can take solace in the fact that if they had played just a little bit better, we could be talking about them having Home Ice Advantage. But there are certainly some improvements that can be made. If they can somehow ignite a brutal power play (7.5% on the playoffs so far), and can somehow find a way to neutralize the obvious speed advantage that the Canucks hold, they should be OK. The coaches will be busy for sure – adjustments need to be made.

Offense was not a problem in Game 1 although the Top Line of Nathan Horton, David Krejci and Milan Lucic have to be better (and I think they will be). The team was able to generate 36 shots against Roberto Luongo. Defense wasn’t a huge issue either. Zdeno Chara did an admirable job in limiting the Sedins effectiveness and Tim Thomas was absolutely brilliant. It is obvious that getting a puck by Roberto Luongo is essential – Thomas appears as though he will do the rest.

The Vancouver Canucks had three lines that were solid in Game 1 with perhaps the best of the three being the third line of Max Lapierre, Yannik Hansen and the Game 1 hero Raffi Torres. Their speed and skill proved to be a difficult matchup for the Boston defense and their tenacity paid off in the form of the only goal of the game. Although being held off the score sheet, the Canucks have to be happy with the play of their Top Line – the Sedins and Alex Burrows were dangerous every time that they stepped onto the ice.

Roberto Luongo is a Game 1 Master – he has shutouts in all four Game 1’s of this year’s playoffs and has won eight straight Game 1’s overall! Insane. Game 2’s aren’t always the same. But with Lou’s obvious confidence, alertness, awareness and incredible rebound control, the Bruins may just be facing the best Luongo of the season.

NHL Betting Trends:
Under is 18-5-3 in BOS last 26 vs. Northwest.
BOS are 12-5 in their last 17 overall.
Under is 15-7-3 in BOS last 25 Sat. games.
Under is 16-5-1 in VAN last 22 home games.
VAN are 38-15 in their last 53 overall.
VAN are 83-36 in their last 119 home games.

Betting Prediction: Game 1 was a bit of a disjointed game as a certain Prognosticator envisioned (pause to pat myself on the back!). 12 Power Plays, one total goal and obvious nerves characterized what was a less-than-scintillating effort by both teams. Expect some adjustments to be made and for the Bruins to find a way to neutralize Vancouver’s speed. All Boston has to do is be a tiny bit better – I think they will do so and will make this an interesting series. At +165, I am willing to take a shot on the road team.

If the refs let the teams play, it will be a much better game but I digress.

Pick: Boston Bruins +165 and the Under – 5 goals
