Toronto Maple Leafs

It seems no matter who’s in front of the net for the Maple Leafs, the opposition seems to struggle to score goals. Jonathan Bernier is 7-4 with a 2.17 GAA (Goals Against Average) and has a save percentage of .917. James Reimer is 4-2 with a 2.30 GAA, and a .942 save percentage. Combined, the Maple Leafs rank third in the NHL with a .936 team save percentage.

The problem for the Maple Leafs of late has been scoring. The Maple Leafs have struggled to score goals ever since the calender flipped on over to November.

The good news is that the Maple Leafs have had success versus the Wild and in their first match up early in the season, the Maple Leafs handily won 4-1.

In Toronto’s last game, the Maple Leafs didn’t give the 100% effort against Boston and it cost them. They came out flat and finally turned it on a bit, but by then it was too late.

After that loss the Maple Leafs were a bit frustrated in their effort. Look for a much better effort in this game versus the Wild.

Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild have been one of the hotter teams in the NHL. The Wild have won 4 of their last five games, and have earned at least a point in 9 of their last 10 games.

Most of their success has come by way of their defense led by goaltender Josh Harding who is 1st in Goals Against Average (1.22), 2nd in the NHL in Save Percentage (.947%), and he also has two shutouts which is the most in the league tied with 6 other goaltenders.

Now, while the Wild have been hot, I’m just not quite buying them just yet. They’ve been extremely hot, especially at home, but when you take a look at their opposition it looks a bit like fool’s gold. In November at home, they’ve been the Montreal Canadians, the New Jersey Devils, and Calgary Flames.

As it stands right now, currently, only one of those teams is a playoff team (Montreal) and they are barely a playoff team as they hold a one point advantage over the Ottawa Senators for the final spot.

When we look deeper into the Wild hot streak they beat the Carolina Hurricanes twice, and the Nashville Predators. Again, two teams that aren’t playoff teams, at the moment. Now, to be fair they did go 1-1 against the Blackhawks in a home and home stand.

I’m not saying the Wild are a bad team, just perhaps a team that is overvalued in this spot.

Danny’s FREE NHL Pick:

Defense, defense, defense. I know a lot of people that don’t like taking the under when it sits at 5. I always say don’t be scared of it. Especially when you have two teams that are very tight defensively, and of course, when you are getting + money as well.

With both teams having some time off I’d expect the offenses to struggle early on as they try and knock some rust off. I expect this to be a close, low scoring game with the Maple Leafs coming out on top. The Maple Leafs are very strong underdogs sitting at +130, and under 5 is sitting at +105.

I believe these are both good picks and both picks have a lot of value.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs +130, and Under 5.
