In their last meeting the Winnipeg Jets got on the board first. Unfortunately, for the Jets, It was all downhill from there. The Chicago Blackhawks ended up reeling off five unanswered scores – including three goals in the second quarter – to beat the Jets 5-1.

The good news for the Jets is that, statistically, the Jets were neck and neck with the Blackhawks. The Jets had 27 shots on goal, the Blackhawks: 25. The Blackhawks had 32 faceoff wins, the Jets: 31. The Jets had 6 takeaways, the Blackhawks: 2. The big difference was the Blackhawks had 6 giveaways, while the Jets had 8 giveaways.

What the giveaways and takeaways mean is that the Blackhawks didn’t give the Jets anything. The Jets earned everything they got and didn’t get any extra opportunities. Meanwhile, the Jets gave the Blackhawks 6 extra opportunities and as we see with the score, the Blackhawks took advantage of just about every opportunity. The Jets, obviously, can’t have any miscues in this game and if they don’t the Jets may very well pull off the win.

Now, let’s take a look at what has happened between the two teams since they last played. First off, the Blackhawks. After the Blackhawks beat the Jets they lost the following game at home to the Calgary Flames in overtime, and then traveled to the White House as they were celebrated and honored for winning the Stanley Cup last year.

The Jets, meanwhile, ended their three game losing streak as they rallied to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 at home. The Jets played hard for all 60 minutes creating 13 takeaways, winning 36 face offs, and getting off 47 shots on goal. Plus, the Jets got a big boost from goalie Al Montoya who stopped 28 shots, who came in relief versus Chicago and played well enough to earn his third start of the season.

Danny’s FREE NHL Prediction:

All in all, this is a tricky game. The Blackhawks should win, and are rightly favored, but with all the traveling they’ve done in the past couple of days they may be a bit tired. Plus, they just played the Jets on the road five days ago and beat them easy.

The Blackhawks may not come out 100% motivated and they may sleepwalk a bit in this game.

On the other side, the Winnipeg Jets have the potential to be a very good team. They’ve shown flashes of being a very good team throughout the season. The Jets are 3-4-2 and in those three wins they’ve beaten two top teams in the St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings; as well as the Dallas Stars.

The problem with the Jets is that they just haven’t been consistent enough.

All in all, this is a game in which the Blackhawks may just dominate the Jets and win 5-1 yet again, but you have to factor in the Jets can be a good team. So, when you get a good team at a +225 I think you have to take them. I’m not confident in the Jets winning, but the value is just too good.

The Blackhawks winning by two goals just is too risky. On the flip side, the value just isn’t in taking the Jets by +1 1/2. So, the best pick – and the best value pick in this match up – is the Winnipeg Jets straight up. You can’t go wrong with a small unit low risk, very high reward pick such as this one.
