Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals have been very hot of late. So hot, in fact, a win over the Detroit Red Wings will catapult them to first place in the Metropolitan division. In their last 10 games the Capitals are 6-3-1, and in the last 5 games the Capitals are 3-1-1. It is worth noting, though, in those two losses, both came on the road to the Phoenix Coyotes and the Colorado Avalanche.

The Capitals have a good, explosive offense, but the key for them of late has been their defense. Their defense has been terrible this season, but of late the Capitals defense has been pretty sturdy; or at least sturdy enough. In the last seven games the Capitals are only giving up 2.28 goals per game.

In their last 7 road games, though it’s been a bit of a different story. The Capitals are 3-3-1, and they’ve allowed 3 goals a game. And that includes a shutout versus the Philadelphia Flyers. If the Red Wings are to get the puck in the net, this is the team to do it against.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings have lost 7 straight games at home before, Back on February 20th to March 25th, 1982, the Detroit Red Wings dropped seven straight at home. The 2013 Detroit Red Wings don’t want to join that group. I expect the Red Wings to really play hard on Friday.

Not only that, but they really haven’t played all that badly. In their last 10 game they have a 3-2-5 record. That’s really not bad. And going back to their losing streak at home, 5 of the 6 losses have come via overtime or shootout. It’s not like Detroit is playing badly and getting blown out. They are still earning points, but they just haven’t done enough to earn that extra point and get those wins.

The lack of wins have been attributed because of a lack of points. Their defense has been very good. They just haven’t been able to find offense aside from Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. If they are going to find some offense, the Washington Capitals are a team that is leaky on defense. They’ve been better of late, but still you really can’t trust them on defense.

Danny’s FREE NHL Pick:

The Red Wings have been close. They’ve been earning points, they just haven’t done quite enough to get that extra point. In this game I think they finally get over the hump and end their overall losing streak, and don’t make history by losing their 7th straight home game. The value isn’t the best, but it’s solid enough.

Pick: Detroit Red Wings -130
