Montreal Canadiens

It was just this past Monday both of these teams played and Montreal got the better of it. New Jersey got on the board first in the first period, but Montreal would regain the lead in the second period with two goals of their own.

In the third, the Devils tied it up, but Alex Galchenyuk would score the game winning goal.

The Canadiens have been very hot of late winning 7 of their last 10 games, and have earned a point in nine of those games. Along the way, the Canadiens defense has been stellar. It’s been the 11th straight game in which Montreal has allowed 2 goals or fewer.

Starting goalie Carey Price has been responsible for the majority of the games as he has allowed two goals or fewer in 8 of those games.

It’s been a fantastic year for Price as he’s been one of the best goalies in the NHL. He’s 6th in the NHL with a 2.00 GAA and has a save percentage of .937 which is good for 3rd. Whether Price plays or not is up in the air, but either way backup goaltender Peter Budaj has been fantastic himself.

He’s 4-1-1 with a 1.63 GAA, a .929 save percentage, and 1 shutout.

New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils haven’t been too shabby on the defensive end as well. For all of the Devils’ struggles, they still rank 7th in the NHL in goals against and 3rd in the Eastern Conference. The problem for the Devils is they can’t score. New Jersey ranks 26th in the NHL in goal scoring.

The Devils average 2.18 goals a game and against a strong defensive unit like the Canadiens it’s going to be a tough task for the Devils to win, even at home.

Plus, the Devils have been hit with a ton of injuries. Defenseman Adam Larsson, forward Stephen Gionta, defenseman Bryce Salvador, and forward Ryan Clowe all are out. With the injuries continuing to pile up, it’s going to be a really tough game for the Devils.

The Prudential Center will need to be rocking to carry this Devils team.

Danny’s FREE NHL Pick:

All in all, goals should be at a premium again, but the value just isn’t there. The under 5 goals is currently at -130 and that might be just a bit too much. It’s a good pick, but just not enough value. The best pick I believe is the Canadiens. Montreal is a slight favorite over the Devils and they’ve just been really hot.

It’s tough to envision how the Devils score on the Canadiens. I’m looking for Montreal to keep their streak of allowing 2 goals or fewer alive and they get the win over the Devils.
