The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to remain perfect on the season Thursday when they play just their third game of the year – this time against the Dallas Stars, a team that made strides in the offseason to enter the rarified air of their Thursday foe.

Dallas is coming off their first win – a 4-2 triumph over Columbus on Tuesday while the Pens haven’t played since Saturday – a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Dallas Stars started the season slowly – two losses while scoring just three goals over that span.

The team bounced back Tuesday and netted four against the previously unbeaten Columbus Blue Jackets. The stars on the Stars played like the stars – Tyler Seguin had a hat trick and Jamie Benn had a goal and three assists – each player’s first points of the season so far.

Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky have yet to make a splash – each has just one assist in Dallas’s three games thus far.

With their best players finally looking like their best players, Dallas has a real chance of picking up just where it left off on Tuesday night – the Pens have allowed six goals in their two games so far and have surrendered five power play goals against in 11 shorthanded opportunities.

Kari Lehtonen should get the start Thursday – he has a nice 1.92 GAA so far this season with a .934 save percentage. However he’s 2-3-1 with a 3.15 goals-against average in his last six starts against the Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have only played two games this year – 120 minutes of hockey and already Sid Crosby is drawing rave reviews. Sid has an incredible three goals and three assists thus far and has looked dominant each and every time he’s been out on the ice.

New line mate Patric Hornqvist has two goals and two assists already while Sid’s other line mate Chris Kunitz has a goal and an assist already.

Evgeni Malkin and Pascal Dupuis each have a goal and three assists, and eight Pens have at least two points in Pittsburgh’s first two games – explosive as ever.

Pittsburgh has netted 11 goals already this season but they have given up six – and that could be a problem. Marc-Andre Fleury has been just OK in posting a .889 save percentage thus far.

NHL Gambling Trends

• DAL are 8-20 in their last 28 road games.
• DAL are 4-10 in their last 14 vs. Metropolitan.
• DAL are 4-10 in their last 14 Thu. games.
• Over is 9-1-1 in PIT last 11 games following a win.
• Over is 8-1-2 in PIT last 11 Thu. games.
• PIT are 19-7 in their last 26 Thu. games.
• DAL are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings.

Pittsburgh has won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two teams but something about having five days off between games has me a little hesitant to go with the home team. Dallas cranked it up Tuesday and should be able to do some damage against Pittsburgh’s Achilles heel – their defense.

The Stars will be out to make a statement in this one – that their offseason moves weren’t in vain. I think they get it done and reward their backers with a pretty nice payday.
