Sharks vs. Kings NHL Preview

The Kings start another NHL campaign bringing their tried, tested and true formula to the table under meat-and-potatoes head coach Darryl Sutter. They will look to repeat as Stanley Cup champs but it starts on Wednesday against the talented, yet enigmatic Sharks.

This all-California matchup is usually one of the Western Conference’s premier tilts, so we should be in for a good one to drop the puck on the 2014/15 regular season.

The Sharks are led by some guys named Joe that are anything but Average: The acute goal scoring of Joe Pavelski (41 goals last year) and the veteran savvy of “Jumbo” Joe Thornton.

Even with a team that’s had talent to spare for years now, San Jose is a confounding hockey club. The Sharks seem to always be in the playoffs and sniffing the grand prize, but can never get over the hump.

The squad finished with an impressive 111 points in the regular season last year, only to bow out in the first round of the postseason. That’s not the first time it’s occurred, but all the same the Sharks have made the playoffs every season since 2003, which is impressive in its own right.

Their neighbors to the South, meanwhile, have been soaking up not just the rays, but the championship glory in recent years. The Kings have brought two Cups to Tinseltown in the past three seasons.

The stable of successful players is virtually unchanged (only D Willie Mitchell signed a free-agent deal with Florida) and Sutter will continue to preach puck possession, grit and steady goaltending.

Still, others emerged last year to put L.A. over the top. The scoring prowess of winger Jeff Carter reached new heights in 2013 (he potted 27) and with the strength of franchise players like C Anze Kopitar, D Drew Doughty and G Jonathan Quick, the Kings are truly a fortress in the West.

The old saying is “the wolf climbing the hill is hungrier than the wolf on top” so expect the Sharks to come out on the road with some fire.

Los Angeles always tends to acquit itself well in the Staples Center, but an inspired effort by the Sharks on Day 1 of the new season should have them leaving town with a victory.

San Jose 3, Los Angeles 2

San Jose should also be playing all-out if the players still buy in to head coach Todd McLellan, who’s says in Silicon Valley are likely numbered if the Sharks don’t put up an inspired effort this season not just in the regular season, but in the NHL’s grueling “second season” also.
