It will be a matchup of the best defensive team the last month, San Jose against one of the hotter offensive teams in the game, Winnipeg. This is the first matchup between the teams since a 3-0 San Jose win back on October 11 in San Jose.

The San Jose Sharks utilized strong defense in December to vault itself back into contention in the Western Conference before an uncharacteristic 7-2 home loss against St. Louis Blues on Saturday.

The Sharks will need another strong effort defensively Monday – they face a red hot Jets team without top offensive threat Joe Thornton who was placed on IR with an upper body injury.

The Sharks had surrendered just 1.91 GAA in 11 games prior to Saturday’s loss but were exposed against St. Louis. The team has scored just nine goals in their last five games overall – a number of San Jose players are in serious slumps.

Patrick Marleau is pointless in his last nine games, Tommy Wingels hasn’t recorded a point in his last six, Justin Braun is pointless in five games and Melkar Karlsson has just one point in his last four.

The hottest of the Sharks forwards is Joe Pavelski who has three points in two game – Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic each have two points in two games to complete a meager Sharks Hot List.

Without Thornton in the lineup there needs to be someone from the Not Hot group that will need to step up in their captain’s absence.

It hasn’t been decided who will be between the pipes Monday – backup Alex Stalock has shut out the Jets in both career appearances including one this season while Antti Niemi is 2-2-1 with a 3.13 GAA in five career starts versus the Jets.

Niemi was pulled after giving up six goals on 27 shots Saturday – he could give way to Stalock.

The Winnipeg Jets have performed well despite injuries this season – they have won 10 of 17 games and are coming off arguably their best all-around effort of the season.

Offensively the Jets are clicking on all cylinders – they have averaged 3.54 goals in their last 13 games.

Bryan Little has three goals and six assists during a six game point streak, Andrew Ladd has six goals and nine assists in 13 games, Dustin Byfuglien, who was absolutely dominant Saturday night, has two points in two games, Blake Wheeler has six points in five games and Mathieu Perrault has 14 points in 14 games.

Three lines are contributing regularly for Winnipeg making them a very tough team to defend as we start the new year.

Like the Sharks, the starting keeper for the Jets has yet to be named. Michael Hutchinson has been sensational – a 10-2-2 record in his last 14 starts with a 1.67 GAA and .941 save percentage over that span.

Ondrej Pavelec is 0-1-1 with a 4.00 GAA and .855 save percentage in his last two starts.

NHL Gambling Trends

• Under is 8-1-2 in SJ last 11 road games.
• SJ are 7-3 in their last 10 vs. Central.
• Over is 6-1-1 in WIN last 8 vs. Western Conference.
• WIN are 4-9 in their last 13 games following a win.
• SJ are 12-4-2 in the last 18 meetings.

The San Jose Sharks have owned the Jets the last few years – 12-4-1 in the last 18 matchups but they enter Monday’s game with some serious question marks.

The Jets on the other hand will be a confident group after pummeling the Leafs on Saturday.

Winnipeg Jets -114

The Sharks are barely a .500 team on the road this year – expect them to struggle against the potent Jets offense. San Jose has some issues offensively – the Jets certainly don’t!
