The Sharks who are just two points up on Vancouver in third place in the Pacific lost 3-1 in Calgary last night while the Canucks are coming off a 3-2 OT win against the Jets on Tuesday.

The San Jose Sharks looked like that had figured a few things out on home ice but are suddenly staring at the possibility of a three game losing streak and falling into a tie for the final Wild Card playoff spot in the West. Inconsistency has been the theme for this team all season long.

Offensively the Sharks have been OK – 2.76 goals per game but were only able to score once in Calgary last night. Joe Pavelski was held off the score sheet but still leads the way for San Jose – he has five goals and three assists in his last seven games, Joe Thornton has 10 points in his last seven games and Logan Couture is still one of the quietest superstars in the game and has 12 points in his last 12 games. Depth seems to be an issue for San Jose – stop the top guys and you have a pretty good chance of winning!

Antti Niemi should get the nod in net despite looking a bit shaky against Edmonton on Monday and getting the night off in Calgary. Niemi is 1-0-1 in his last two starts overall with a 1.92 GAA and .944 save percentage.

The Vancouver Canucks continue to make it difficult of themselves in terms of playoff positioning – they are 2-3 in their last five games and 5-5 in their last 10 overall. The power play went 0-for-6 against Winnipeg and is now 4-for-42 in the last 12 games.

That said there are a few good signs for the Canucks heading into Thursday’s game – Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin and Radim Vrbata all are on three-game point streaks, recent call-up Ronalds Kenins has goals in two if his three career games, providing some much needed depth and players like Chris Higgins, Luca Sbisa and Alex Burrows are officially out of enormously long scoring droughts thanks to goals against Winnipeg.

Four Canucks have recorded two points against the Sharks this season, with All-Star RW Radim Vrbata leading the way with a pair of goals.

Ryan Miller should be between the pipes Thursday after Eddie Lack started Tuesday against Winnipeg. Miller has been far-from-great lately however. He is just 1-2-0 in his last three games with a 2.76 GAA and ugly .875 save percentage. Miller will be eager to bounce back after giving up four goals on 20 shots against Minnesota on Sunday.

He faces a Sharks team that he’s won seven straight against with a tidy 1.55 GAA over that span.

NHL Gambling Trends

• Under is 9-2-3 in SJ last 14 road games.
• Under is 11-3-2 in VAN last 16 overall.
• Under is 5-2-2 in VAN last 9 home games.
• SJ are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.

Neither of these teams is playing particularly well at the moment – neither is inspiring a ton of confidence right now.

NHL Betting 4* Free Play

The Sharks have won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the clubs (0-for-2 this year) and have won five straight meetings in Vancouver.

San Jose Sharks +131

Those are the numbers that jump out at me! San Jose is a much better team than they’ve shown – expect a bounce back Thursday in one of their favorite road buildings in the league.
