The visitors from Motown are in the midst of the notoriously tricky southern California road swing; a 4-3 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks last night buttressed with a stop at the Staples Center tonight to take on the defending champion Kings – a club scrapping for their playoff lives, though the battle has been going better of late.

With Detroit contending like it always does, it should make for some great hockey.

Having won two of the past three Stanley Cups, the Kings have squeaked into the eighth spot in the Western Conference playoff race and they seem primed to be the team to knock the inexperienced Nashville Predators off their pedestal in a first-round matchup.

With the veteran playoff savvy of goaltender Jonathan Quick and all the other clutch performers whose teeth have been cut for some time, the Kings are not a club to be taken lightly.

The Red Wings surely hear this message loud and clear, particularly after a narrow loss to the Ducks in Orange County. Russian superstar Pavel Datsyuk had two goals in a losing effort and the Wings still salvaged a point out of the proceedings.

It has done wonders for the popularity of the sport in SoCal, having two strong teams like the Kings and Ducks. While hockey might be the latest fad on the Left Coast, Detroit has been churning out winning seasons and playoff appearances as long as people can remember.

The Wings have been successful this year (33-14-11 for 77 points and third in the Atlantic division) thanks to a sizzling power play, which is tops in the league, converting at almost 26%.

There’s been plenty of scoring not only with old hands Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, but coming-out parties from Tomas Tatar and Gus Nyquist. Detroit currently sits only three back of Tampa Bay for second and four back of Montreal for tops in the division.

This Golden State roadtrip is a real test of character, however. The Wings need to bounce back after the first leg of the back-to-back and try to wrest two points from the reigning Cup champs.

The Kings are in a three-way tie for third in the Pacific division with Calgary and San Jose, but conventional wisdom states that L.A. can leave those teams in the dust at this time of the season.

Look for players like goal-scorer Jeff Carter and youngster Tyler Toffoli to keep pouring it on. Having one of the most athletic ‘tenders in the NHL between the pipes doesn’t hurt, either.

I think the Kings are gathering momentum, so look for them to send the Wings back to the Midwest scratching their collective heads.
