While the Wings have overachieved and are embroiled in a fight for top spot in the Atlantic Division with Montreal and Tampa Bay, the Avalanche find themselves in a dog-fight – four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

The Detroit Red Wings are Hot – they are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and they are generally healthy which is saying a lot for this team – except for between the pipes. Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Nick Kronwall have all played 50 games this year – a huge coup for this team.

Together the stars on offense have averaged 3.9 goals in their last eight games – the team has won seven of those contests. Gustav Nyqvist has eight points in six games, Jonathan Ericcson has four points in four games and the usual suspects have been effective each and every night. Expect Pavel Datsyuk to be a factor in this game – he has six goals and five assists during an eight-game point streak in the series and usually saves his best for the Avs.

Detroit is 8-for-23 on the power play over that span – ya – everything is clicking!

Goaltender Petr Mrazek will get the start Thursday for Detroit with Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson injured. He is 1-1-0 with a 3.60 GAA and .842 save percentage in his last two starts but did play well earlier this year against Colorado in a 2-1 shootout loss.

The Colorado Avalanche seem to have turned a bit of a corner the last couple of weeks but still have some work to do in order to realize their lofty preseason expectations. They have picked up points in seven of their last eight games (4-1-3) but the numbers reflect the notion that they are just an average team.

It isn’t difficult to see why this team is only four games over .500 – they are scoring a below average 2.49 goals per game and they are surrendering 2.72.

That said the offense has shown signs lately – Alex Tanguay has nine points in his last 11 games, Jarome Iginla has 15 points in 20 games, Gabriel Landeskog has three points in three games, Nathan MacKinnon has two points in two games and Nick Holden has three points in four games. Interestingly enough however, Colorado’s top score – Alex Tanguay would rank fifth if he was on the Red Wings roster.

Seymon Varlamov has also picked up his game lately and is once again giving the Avs a chance to win each and every night.

He is 7-2-2 with a 1.98 GAA in his last 11 appearances but is 1-4-0 against the Red Wings with an ugly 3.58 GAA over that span.

NHL Gambling Trends

• DET are 7-1 in their last 8 vs. Central.
• DET are 7-1 in their last 8 overall.
• COL are 16-7 in their last 23 Thu. games.
• DET are 20-7 in the last 27 meetings in Colorado.
• DET are 27-13 in the last 40 meetings.

Detroit is 4-0-2 in the last six games against Colorado but have lost the last two in overtime. That said Detroit looks like the far better team ahead of this game.

Despite being just four games over .500 on the road this year I like them to prevail Thursday.
