After a convincing victory over the Boston Bruins last week, the Maple Leafs were sitting pretty and even commanding some respect from others in the Eastern Conference. However, much of that cache disappeared after an embarrassing 6-2 loss against the lowly Buffalo Sabres in the Queen City this past Saturday.

The Preds come north of the border with a bona fide young star in center Filip Forsberg. The Swede leads the team with 20 points and, along with defensemen Seth Jones (20 years old), Ryan Ellis (23) and Roman Josi (24) make up a great young core for Nashville.

Nashville is currently second in the competitive Central Division with an 11-4-2 mark. They are riding Forsberg, a stout defense and good goaltending to its success. It won’t be an easy task for the home Leafs.

After a good finish to October and start to November, the Buds are back in a mini-tailspin after a narrow home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the humiliation in western New York.

The Leafs have reliable scorers in Phil Kessel and James van Reimsdyk and other players having a breakout year like Daniel Winnik and Mike Santorelli, but poor goaltending continues to plague the franchise.

Despite having goalie Jonathan Bernier, who looked like real deal as a backup to Jonathan Quick in Los Angeles a couple seasons ago, Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle continues to use a revolving door in net.

The results are miserable. James Reimer was terrible in Buffalo, and even Bernier has struggled at times.

It’s a broken record for the Leafs, a hockey club that will figure one thing out, only to have regression in a different aspect of the game.

The Preds look like the real deal. The excessive youth on the roster means Nashville has excellent team speed and new head coach Peter Laviolette is a known magic-worker, despite being fired from previous positions.

After injury issues over the last couple of seasons, former elite starting goalie Pekka Rinne seems back to his once-dominant form (he currently has 11 wins, a 1.92 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage).

This all translates to Nashville being a player in the Western Conference in 2014, and further muddying the postseason waters in the wild West.

A home win for the Leafs would steady this ship, but steady hasn’t been the franchise’s M.O. for some time now. A continued tailspin would likely cost Carlyle his job, though the majority of the team’s fans will tell you that should have happened in the offseason.
