The Preds enter the game having lost two straight games while the Rangers are also coming off a loss – their first regulation defeat since February 7. The Rangers may have a new piece in town in time for Monday’s game – All-Star defenseman Keith Yandle was acquired from Arizona on Sunday afternoon to bolster what was already an impressive defensive unit.

The Nashville Predators have hit a rough patch – that’s for sure but haven’t been quite as bad as their recent record suggests. An example is last time out when they outshot Detroit 40-25 but lost 4-3. The team is 2-3-1 in their last six games and has given up 19 goals over that span – totally uncharacteristic for the club.

Pekka Rinne will likely get the start between the pipes for Nashville – when they are going well it is usually because Rinne is on top of his game and vice versa. Rinne enters Monday’s game having lost four of his last five starts with a 3.20 GAA over that span – quite a difference from the 2.07 GAA he has posted this year. He will bounce back – it’s just a matter of WHEN.

A number of Predators key offensive contributors have also been scuffling lately – Shea Weber has one point in six games, James Neal is pointless in his last five games, Colin Wilson hasn’t hit the score sheet in four games and newcomer Mike Santorelli is also pointless in five.

However Matt Cullen has a three-game points streak and eight points in his past eight games, Roman Josi has four points in three games and Craig Smith has nine points in his last eight games.

Altogether Nashville is scoring a very respectable 2.94 goals per games – top third in the NHL.

Ahead of the Predators in offensive production is the New York Rangers who are one of the best offensive and best defensive teams in the game. The Rangers average 3.10 goals per game and surrender just 2.41. They have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games making us all forget that their best player Henrik Lundqvist is still out of the lineup.

Lundqvist’s backup Cam Talbot has been OK since his injury – he has gone 8-2-2 but has posted a slightly unflattering 2.80 GAA over that span. Newcomer Keith Yandle and arguably the best top 6 defensive core should be able to hold teams down in theory but it hasn’t been happening lately.

Talbot will get the start Monday night and hope that his sizzling offense continues to win games. The Rangers averaged 3.71 goals in 12 games in February – the best mark for any team in the NHL last month.

That said there are a number of Rangers players that have certainly not been filling the net. Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis are pointless in three games, Mats Zuccarello has one point in four games, Dan Boyle hasn’t hit the score sheet in four games and Dan Girardi is pointless in five.

It speaks to the depth of the Rangers that they are second in the Metropolitan Division with games in hand. New York can and will beat you with four lines and is one of the favorites to emerge out of the Eastern Conference because of that depth.

NHL Gambling Trends

• Over is 12-3-2 in NAS last 17 Mon. games.
• NAS are 7-2 in their last 9 vs. Metropolitan.
• NAS are 47-23 in their last 70 overall.
• Over is 7-1 in NYR last 8 Mon. games.
• Over is 8-2 in NYR last 10 overall.
• NYR are 27-9 in their last 36 overall.
• Road team is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

The Nashville Predators have won six of their last eight games at Madison Square Garden but they will be hard-pressed to knock off the hottest team in the NHL on Monday night. The Rangers are just too good offensively right now and they may have caught a struggling Pekka Rinne at just the right time.
