LA

The Los Angeles Kings will look to make it seven straight victories against the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night when their Pacific Division foe pays visit. Edmonton, still searching for their first win of the season gained a point Saturday night in a shootout loss to the Canucks and will be eager to snap their miserable seven game slide against the Kings.

So what can we expect on the busy night on the NHL schedule? Let’s break it down.

Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers remain winless on the season but they did do some good things in their 5-4 shootout loss to the Canucks Saturday. Firstly they generated some offense against Ryan Miller and company. Secondly they scored on a power play that is 3-for-6 so far this young season and thirdly they are getting production from newcomer Teddy Purcell (1 goal and two assists) and Nial Yakupov (1 goal and 1 assist).

But that’s about where the accolades stop for Edmonton – Jordan Eberle is pointless so far while Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins have just one assist apiece in their two games. All three of the Oilers young superstars are a minus two so far. Each goaltender has one start – neither has looked good behind a defense that looks typically shaky early on. Scrivens should get the start Tuesday – he had 46 saves in a 4-2 home loss to the Kings in March.

Going into LA, the negatives could be amplified. The Kings have earned at least one point in 26 of 28 overall meetings with the Oilers going 19-2-7 and they have won their last four on home ice in the series – outscoring Edmonton 11-2 with two shutouts over that span. The Kings have won six straight meetings with Edmonton overall – total domination.

The Kings enter Tuesday’s game off their first win of the year – a 4-1 victory over Winnipeg. The usual suspects showed up on the score sheet in that game – Jeff Carter, Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli each had a goal and an assist in the win. This after losses in their first two games.

There are a couple of troubling trends for this team after three games – the top line has recorded five of LA’s six goals already and Jonathan Quick has a 4.01 GAA in two starts this year.

But Quick has an 0.65 GAA with a shutout during a three-game home winning streak versus Edmonton and the Kings’ depth will surface sooner rather than later.

NHL Gambling Trends

EDM are 24-77 in their last 101 vs. Pacific.
• Over is 12-4 in EDM last 16 vs. Western Conference.
• EDM are 51-121 in their last 172 road games.
• Over is 6-1-2 in LA last 9 vs. Western Conference.
• Over is 4-1-3 in LA last 8 home games.
• LA are 58-27 in their last 85 home games.
• Under is 19-6-2 in the last 27 meetings.

We shouldn’t be worrying about the Kings – the early season doldrums could be a thing of the past already. LA absolutely owns Edmonton – their brand of hockey is an absolute nightmare for the smallish Oilers forwards. Because there is no value on the Moneyline, I’m taking the Over in this game – 5 goals. With neither goaltender sharp, this game has a chance to be a high scoring affair.
