The Blues are among the league’s best teams, while Edmonton is bottom of the barrel and firmly in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

Talk about different poles: With tonight’s game, Edmonton can notch a franchise-record 13th straight road loss. With the win, St. Lou can win its fifth straight.

The Oilers have become a cautionary tale to other hockey clubs in the NHL of what not to do during a “scorched-earth” rebuild. Edmonton had seemingly endless top picks in the draft, but their selections – apart from genuine star winger Taylor Hall – have been swings and misses.

Center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Russian winger Nail Yakupov, in particular, are looking like busts. Maybe this is harsh with these two players being in their age-21 seasons, but they’ve each had a couple of NHL campaigns to get their act together.

It hasn’t happened.

You look at the Blues and the narrative couldn’t be more to the contrary. St. Louis puts the puck in the net (second in the NHL averaging 3.1 goals per game), keeps the puck out of their net (eighth-ranked), and has a blistering power-play (first, at 26.2% efficiency).

The Blues are enjoying a breakout year from Vladimir Tarasenko (23 goals, 44 points) and the blueline core of Kevin Shattenkirk and Alex Pietrangelo to go with wily vet Jay Bouwmeester is tremendously effective.

St. Louis makes shrewd acquisitions, has excellent depth on its roster, and while it ranks third in the Central division with 55 points (26-13-3), the two teams above the Blues – the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators – are the only clubs you could consider better Cup contenders than St. Lou.

The home team has enjoyed balanced scoring for a couple seasons now, from not only the aforementioned skaters but also Jaden Schwartz, Alex Steen, David Backes and T.J. Oshie, he-of-the-American-shootout-heroics-in-the-Olympics.

Clearly, this is a talented team with a high ceiling.

The Blues are heavy favorites going into this contest, and they should be. They’ve beaten the San Jose Sharks (no pushover) by a score of 7-2 twice this month, and also goose-egged the Arizona Coyotes, 6-0.

To be fair, the Oilers have responded with a little more piss-and-vinegar since head coach Todd Nelson was brought in to replace the canned Dallas Eakins, but that franchise should be looking to ship people out and grab another top selection in next year’s draft.

Edmonton did beat the league-leading Blackhawks last week, 5-2, but that was just to show people that the universe is random sometimes.

4* Free NHL Pick: St. Louis 5, Edmonton 2

It’s not pretty in the City of Champions, while in St. Louis, residents are used to celebrating the consistent St. Louis Cardinals of the MLB, but they’d surely like another champ to add to the list.

Take the OVER

Blues in a landslide.
